whereas someone like Nick Cave has some awful songs (most of Dig, Lazarus, Dig, for example), but you'd struggle to find any lyrics that aren't amazing.

also @Lili Marlene skipped the country rather than having to listen to this. Gotta admire the lengths that lad would go to to get out of this.

This is an entertaining read, with this thread in hindsight joanna newsom " Ys " Thumped is for pricks, but at least we're consistent pricks. Everyone who liked/disliked it back in 2006 is sticking to their guns 10 years on. Except @washingcattle. He loves this shit now.

fair play Gaz, I enjoyed reading that. On this This is actually a great example of another band who have wonderful songs, but who people might initially be put off by the challenging vocal styling. And its a great example of a band who are a very rewarding listen if one persists. Good call.

Those in the middle-ground (the 'its grand' brigade) mostly made those comments (from what I could tell) after a few minutes of their first listen, though. Which is why I said I'd be curious to know what they thought after spending a bit of time with it. I'm not sure if anyone who said they...

Anyway, thats it from me on this. In a way I'm glad that Ys had its week, but equally glad that we're almost done with it. Back to 'normal' albums on friday then.

Just to elaborate on this point. I think its because it doesn't need me to defend it. Maybe if I thought everyone else hated it I'd feel differently, but there are a lot of people out there who feel the same way about this album as I do. She pretty much sells out every show she plays. And, as...

This. It bugs me when I read a review of something and it gets compared to Joanna Newsom. Almost without fail, anytime I've gone and listened to something like that; 1) Its nothing like Joanna Newsom (nothing is though, is it), and 2) I usually hate it.

    Joanna Newsom - Ys (2006)

This thread went pretty much as I envisaged it would. It was always going to be a very polarising album, even from as far back as when we first touted the idea of the album club. It generated a bit less discussion than I thought, but the points of view put forth were predictable enough. I don't...

PS: fair play to you. I'm a selfish prick. I'd never bring someone to a JN gig. Wouldn't want the distraction of wondering if they liked it or not.

I'd say to break it up if you're struggling to listen to it straight through. Only Skin is epic. The part with Bill Callahan on backing vocals is sublime. And Emily is fantastic. Its about her sister who's an astrophysicist. Start with these 2. Then pick the others off on subsequent listens.
