Things I should have known before now...

I keep getting Instagram suggestions for SLOWDIVE. Apparently they got three 'single of week' reviews from music papers in 1990-91 but I only remember the abuse the UK music press gave them in 92/93. They seemed particularly singled out for abuse for persisting with a sound deemed 'stale' when...

Dice was banned by American MTV before Unbelievable came out. So they had to wave that for the EMF song which actually got to no. 1 there.

Things I should have known before now...

being very stupid, I only realised this year that tracks off two of my favourite rap albums were part of a beef between Willie D (Geto Boys) and Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah w/ Monie Love - Ladies First (1989) off All Hail The Queen LP Monie has been a radio DJ for years in the USA. she...

just to clarify: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Penhall Speedway rider Bruce Penhall who played Bruce Nelson was actually only on 18 episodes in 1982-83 near the end of CHiPs run. I never liked CHiPs. Being only 7 when it ended, I thought it was boring. It was on about tea time on Sundays...

Things I should have known before now...

Bruce (?) the blondie guy of the main duo on CHiPs was one the best speedway riders of that era. I think he was a world champ. He continued to compete during the shows run. Speedway had a huge boom in the late 70s and sell out events were held at Wembley stadium.

Also just realised last year the Councilor Denna Troi's mother Loxanna Troi was played by Gene Roddenberry's wife. Apologies for forgetting her name but she also appeared in another role on the original Star Trek series in the 60's.

The oil slick monster thing that killed Tasha Yar was one of the greatest Star Trek baddies. The roar of it when they saved Denna Troi and beamed her up and it realised Picard had beaten it and left it trapped on the planet.

the late RTE news sports presenter Colm Murray's niece is Session Moth Martina. she's now a US based pro wrestler. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Session_Moth_Martina years ago Jonny Trunk released a CD of an actor reading letters written to nude models - one of which was his sister. I never...

Star Wars opened in the USA in May 1977. OK, I knew that. BUT it didn't open in the UK and Ireland until 27 December 1977 (makes no sense for selling toys and merch). it was already on release in most European countries before that e.g. France - 19 October 1977 Star Wars release date info...

Things I should have known before now...

I remember those 70's educational short animated films The National Film Board of Canada* made. they all had this faded out, dated 70's colouring like the photo on the album cover. as an 80's kid it gave me the impression Canada was a grim place. this fits the bill: but some of the others I...

Completely wretched song that I detested since it came out. The couple in BMG had previously made their name as songwriters for Whitney Houston.

I have suddenly realised I recognised this guy from somewhere and then it dawned on me. I never paid any attention to Tommy Tiernan until the mid 2010's, so I couldn't imagine him without a grey beard. jesus, he looks different. I am proudly ignorant of people who are only famous in Ireland.

I got Bone Machine in 1992 as a teen who knew little about Waits. I still think it has some amazing songs. however when I got a tape that had both Swordfishtrombones AND Rain Dogs on it (remember those ?) I was really disappointed and thought it very lightweight in comparison. the 70's albums...

I posted this a few years ago in the celebrity creeps thread (Gay Byrne). I first saw this footage on BBC 4 in a doc which compiled about an hours worth of Waits clips from over the decades.
