What Book Did You Read Last Night???

i'm reading eoghan daltun's 'an irish atlantic rainforest' and i've been reading it for months. wading through it, really, it should have been two thirds the length it is.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

turns out it's not, it's reasonably old. mildly diverting without a huge amount of insight, based on the little i've watched so far, but did have this nugget; gene roddenberry apparently told william shatner that star trek was 'horatio hornblower in space', and lo and behold:

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

i've been on a bit of a binge rereading iain m banks, and just finished 'matter'; it seems to be fairly widely regarded as one of the weakest Culture novels, but i really like it.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

i read 'use of weapons' recently and would agree with you regarding the reveal. i think sometimes he can let obvious plot holes in through the sprawling nature of his plotlines, so you're swamped with detail and miss out on them. e.g. in 'the algebraist' - a non-culture M novel - FTL is not...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

currently reading 'a for andromeda' by fred hoyle; took a while to get going but it's getting good. some of the writing is kinda gauche ('he had the sort of hands you could imagine handling large objects' sort of stuff) but the plot is good after the slow start. i'd barely been aware of the...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

nearly at the end of 'greybeard' by brian aldiss. it's not grabbing me, it's aimless and a bit drab. hard to warm to the main characters, they're not really fleshed out.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

i'm reading a short history of germany at the moment - at about 1800 now - and christ, it's a headmelter. at least with ireland, you know where the place stops and starts, but with germany it keeps moving around, disappearing and reappearing and it's hard to keep up.

moneyball was the one of his i enjoyed least. you really need a modicum of knowledge about the sport to get the best out of it.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

reading 'boomerang' by michael lewis (he who wrote 'the big short'); it's very funny; he visits the various countries in europe which suffered in the downturn to understand why, and is very amusingly cutting about each one in turn. i've read the chapters on iceland, greece and ireland so far.
