These from Richer are an amazing bargain Monitor Audio BRONZE 2 White I just picked up the previous model in the spring, otherwise I'd be all over these. Make sure and choose sterling if buying though, they have a big mark up on Euro.

Well, if the problem is you have to really ramp up the volume and there's a bit of hum or anything, it's probably that you need a phono stage pre-amp. Most amps made in the 2000's have assumed record players are a thing of the past, so weren't designed to accomodate them. Is it a phono input or...

What kind of crap? Quiet and lifeless? Slow and draggy? You might need a phono preamp, or the belt replacing, or the needle isn't matched.

They don't make them anymore, but Ikea did a bedside locker called a Corras. Whip the castors off, slide the middle shelf off and you have a fantastic record shelf and hifi stand. Turn up on adverts from time to time
