What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Oh lots of people dislike MH...that's why he's 'controversial'. As for glaring factual errors...it is a work of fiction, no?

Netherland-Joseph O'Neill. Enjoyable. Great structure, well-realised characters (hilariously deluded narrator reminded me of him from The Great Gatsby) and some memorable sentences. Gonna start 'Child 44' by Tom Rob Smith tonight.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Friends Of My Youth/Alice Munro Just brilliant. Wistful, melancholic, pared-down prose a la Raymond Carver, Tobias Wolfe, Richard Ford.

All Auster's books (bar the latest) are down in The Secret Book & Record Store including the graphic novel of City Of Glass. Save yerself a few quid. Brooklyn Follies was rubbish wasn't it? I enjoyed everything he'd written up til then but I don't think he reached the heights of the New York...

I really enjoyed 'Everyman' too. Bleak but compelling. Roth has plenty of detractors on Thumped for reasons I don't understand. He's had such a run of great novels since 'American Pastoral'...although 'Sabath's Theatre' is probably my favourite of his.

Hmm. Gonna leave this one 'til last. Loved 'Cloud Atlas', now on 'Ghostwritten' and 'have 'Number9dream' on the shelf. Great writer.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

It's 'Kuh-ruh-MAH-zuf' according to the Ruskie I know. Emphasis on yr. MAH there. Currently reading 'Death & The Penguin' by Alexander Kurkov. It's stylistically reminiscent of Doestoyevsky...haven't figured out the significance of the penguin forty pages in.

I love that book. I've read it about four or five times at this stage. It's so honest and sad and angry...

Be careful you don't pick up 'The Russian Debutante's Handjob' by Jerry Shteynfarb. He sleeps with all his students you know.

Hmn. You read one David Sedaris, you've read them all. All his books/essays are about how difficult (but funny) it is to grow up gay in the American South.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

'Seize The Day' has a more straight-forward narrative to it than 'Herzog'. Better place to start perhaps but why not jump in at the deep end, says I. 'The Adventures Of Augie March' is another one of his recognized masterpieces-by whom I'm not sure (Harold Bloom, perhaps?!)-I enjoyed it though...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Molloy is made up of two internal monologues- the eponymous ah, hero and the fastidious detective who pursues him. When you get to grips with the structure and Beck's paired-down prose style you'll be laughing. Almost. Literally.
