What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I'm currently reading this: I recommend it. Best poetry I think I've ever read. He's very down on ye olde Catholic church, probably why he doesn't get a sniff at our educational curriculum. Quality stuff though. Before I bought the book I started reading it here: http://fleursdumal.org/ -...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I downloaded a very good free time management android app called 'DreamingCat' and it's since taken over my life. But it claims in it's info section, in beautiful google-translate English: I should look at the wiki entry for the book, but does he really say that..? I reckon I should be sorted...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

It's true that Delaney is highly regarded in SF/Fantasy circles, although god knows why. He's written some true stinkers, The Fall Of The Towers being one of the worst novels I've read. Nova is the only decent one from him I've read and it's probably his straightest novel. Dhalgren is a magic...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Just finished this: Some of the stories are pretty great, but as it goes on the style becomes fairly wearisome. Tbh, I was glad to be finished it. MS Found In A Bottle is deadly. http://www.classic-literature.co.uk/american-authors/19th-century/edgar-allan-poe/ms-found-in-a-bottle/ Edit: The...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

In fairness, it probably isn't a holiday read.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I recently finished the Gormenghast trilogy, which I started back in the day. It's totally awesome. The prose is very rich and poetic. Book 1 is probably my favorite. Book 3 is very interesting, despite being quite sketchy due Peake's terminal illness. It has quite a few oblique references to...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

The first one I read was The Wrench. It's fab. No real story line, more a recounting of the experiences of a rigger on various jobs he worked on. It's really mellow. If Not Now, When is great also, because, as already said, it's like an advenuture novel, only more misadventure. I would...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

The Truce is pretty great as well. I love the Periodic Table too - the story of the lead miner is very memorable. Many of the stories are quite metaphysical, which is pretty unusual.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Indeed. In fairness, he does have that American snappiness and wit that you get with a lot of the 60s and 70s American lit. When it works it's hilarious.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Mother Night is very weak alright. I think only his early stuff and maybe Galapagos is good. Cat's Cradle is the best one I think. He seems to believe the hype in his later books. Overall, I wouldn't say he's a great writer, but for some reason I've read, or read and abandoned, just about...

I've heard Kafka On The Shore by Murakami is very good. Haven't got it myself yet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kafka_on_the_Shore

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Yeah, I agree. He was never going to win the Pulitzer but the ideas in his books are totally out there, sometimes to the point at which it makes no sense at all. The stories get progressively crazier as they go along. Ubik is probably my favorite, although it's not to everyone's taste.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

Just finished The Hawkline Monster - A Gothic Western by Richard Brautigan. Excellent - really funny, enjoyable, very readable. Have just abandoned half way through Slapstick by Vonnegut. No offence to any Vonnegut fans but it's really sh*te. That and Timequake are bad books I think. Too self...

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I only watched the first half of the beach a couple of years ago, but it did slightly of poision reading the book. Kept picturing Leonardo, which isn't good. I think they should have cast an Engrish actor and character for the role.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

I loved the movie Atomised but have never read the book. I tried reading The Possibility Of An Island, but didn't like it. I found the characters too unsympathetic, basically, they're all rich assholes. He's a bit of an enfant terrible though, which is cool.

What Book Did You Read Last Night???

That's the exact same as me. Scary. What type of bicycle do you own? I've also read a bit of the Dalkey Archive, which is good, but I never finished it for some reason. Some of Myles Na gCopaleen worth a read, although a knowledge of Latin would help.
