Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

Listened to it earlier. I liked it but it didn't grab me like those Talk Talk ones did. Will give it a few more goes.

I didn't know that Hollis had a solo album (though it could well have been mentioned in this thread earlier). Must check that out later.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

After streaming this every week or two since first hearing it on Thumped Album Club, I bought the LP yesterday. This is such an amazing album. Dipped into Laughing Stock a couple of times, also good but need to spend more time with it. It didn't suck me in like this one.

They seem to be depressed enough based on their interviews. It utterly depends on the music. I don't think I could get through an article on polyrhythmic mechanisms underpinning complex cultural references in the music of Iron Maiden when I could just stick on "The Trooper" and play air guitar...

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

It was originally a catch-all for all those 90s bands that were doing stuff like this (Labradford, Tortoise) or more classically inclined like Stars of the Lid or Godspeed You Black Emperor! Then it came to mean instrumental rock that is full of ersatz emotion and Feelings with a capital F like...

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

Some more thoughts: - The approach to recording this album is as interesting as the music itself. Initially, it sounded like they were trying to emulate Can's recording method where you just play and play and play with the tape constantly rolling, then go back and cherrypick the best parts into...

It's fucking deadly, easily five stars.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

"Wreath" is just coming to a close now, ending my first play through of the album and what an album! Thank you to whoever suggested this one, you are wonderful. You can almost hear every band on Kranky taking notes in the background, it sounds about ten years younger than it is. The only thing...

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden (1988)

Exact same boat, I've been meaning to check out Talk Talk for years as they seem to be name-dropped by so many (and varied) different bands that I like. The inevitable Joanna Newsom album will address the sausage fest point but maybe not the irritating lead vocals situation.
