General election 2020 (1 Viewer)

Y'know this whole business of "they're destroying their documents on the flight in to the country, we don't know who they are?"

Presumably the people in this scenario had to have documents to get on to the plane.

So there's a reasonable chance of knowing who they are, the passenger manifest would be available to the authorities.

I don't know how many people might or might not be doing this and how many might be on a particular flight, but it can be narrowed down to a small group.
It's a load of bollocks anyway, if you're fleeing a warzone or persecution you might not have the time to get all your legal affairs in perfect order so you can become the model refugee and meet the standards of the racists who will just find another excuse. You want people to stop coming here? Maybe look at the root causes.

Not Ukraine related but read this recently,

My Fourth Time, We Drowned by Sally Hayden: 9781685890575 | PenguinRandomHouse.com: Books

Grim stuff, she doesn't go much into the world politics stuff of it all, but we're all complicit in endless crimes against humanity. No one is coming here when things are great back home.

No one's doing follow up cos no one cares
Lads show up with no documents, they are just processed
Immigration lads will complain, but no one's going full Colombo on it

These lads ditched their documents so they could claim to be from a war zone or a country that we don't return to, or whatever they've been told will work. If they were from a war zone, they keep the documents.

It's like anything else, it's a loophole that someone found out and word spread quickly. Desperate people do desperate things.

Not sure how the UK handle this, but I have to think they come a little stronger especially given any of my recent experience with Border Force.
Not that we want to emulate the UK, but this is likely another stream where we are receiving lads who might otherwise have gone there. Making a shit situation, shittier.

which lads destroyed their documents?

which lads destroyed their documents?
About 40% of all asylum seekers last year according to the figures from immigration

They got an a flight with documents
Got rid of them
Were refused entry by immigration
Then claimed asylum with a specialist immigration Gard after being passed on by immigration

"Desperate people do desperate things" is about the long and short of it alright.

I imagine all the human rights agreements the respectability chasers cling to are going to get seriously cut back and reinterpreted in the coming years. Sure they're already doing it in the Mediterranean (that book again).

I've volunteered a bit in my time at food banks and the like
And there's an ongoing issue that the people you set out to help, aren't always the people that show up

The intent is to help people in food poverty and hunger, but you have to deal with people in nice cars or Toyota SUVs (for want of a better signifier) showing up looking for their free food
Most everywhere has a policy of 'if they show up, we help'
But it's a stressor on volunteer numbers - people will say to you, "I didn't give up my Saturday to help chancers" that sort of thing
And you say "Well, we don't know everyone's story" but often they don't come back,

The parallel being that you may set out to help Somalis in war and Ukrainians getting bombed, but you're gonna get Georgians or Pakistanis or whoever who simply see no future for themselves there and want into Europe.
Europe looks to them like the U.S. does to Latin Americans; way way better than what they've got.

You have to accept that if you're an attractive place to live people are gonna come, and if you believe in an open door, then you are gonna have to accept that a fair wedge will be leaving relatively peaceful but poor countries. And you either make your peace with that or you don't.
And even people who are naturally somewhat open to immigration often don't accept that. They don't want the rule-breakers, they only want the truly needy and desperate.

The real debate is between people who believe in immigration and how we set and implement those policies.
Not between us and the send-'em-back-to-where-they-came-from lads. That's settled business.

I've seen a few videos of this lad in the past wee while. Angry dude, talks with the restraint and volume of an all-ireland winning captain who doesn't realise what the mic he's holding is for.

Ultimately the question is why is your country the attractive place to live and why is the country they are leaving not?

I say ultimately because there's little day to day benefit to looking into it, but it is the root cause. I suppose we all know this but you could spent your whole life ignoring it and just dealing with present tense emergency followed by present tense emergency, hey its worked until now!

We'll see if climate change will force a few hands as, what, a billion people are forced to move? Don't know if warmed over cold war rhetoric will continue to work in that situation.

This is the big one, countries that will remain habitable are going to likely have to expect big numbers in the coming decades from countries that no longer are.

was talking about that to a friend who's an older long term humanitarian and environmentalist. a complete man of peace.

he said we'll be beating them off the beaches with cudgels

The EU is currently paying to train and maintain the Libyan coastguard, and paying for helicopters and the like to guide these coastguards to pick up migrant boats and drag them back to concentration camps in Libya so they don't have to take them into Europe under humanitarian laws. Out of sight, out of mind.

I'd say this will accelerate hugely, Children of Men style I guess. I've long been reading people positing that the return of zombie apocalypse movies is tied directly to psychological fears of immigration.

Buy a house with very thick stone walls, lads
Like an old school or something

You'd be saving money on cudgels in the long-term

the NUJ have issued a statement condemning the abuse kitty holland has been receiving on social media since the incident; she's being accused by people of fabricating it.
"The Irish Times had just left the camp having interviewed the residents – most of them EU nationals – about the camp and homelessness, and returned on seeing the group arrive." as per a more recent article on it.

there's also another consideration, in that even independent of factors driving migration, many (most) european countries will need significant inward migration to keep the economies going in the medium to long term. You can't have fortress europe if the barricades are largely manned by pensioners.

but yeah - just another reason why the next century will be great craic altogether.

What's the latest actual news on the story about the attack on the camp?

McGuirk has been saying that Kitty Holland told gript that she didn't witness it but nothing elsewhere.
The Gards are "investigating it" which means they hope it will go away

So it was someone other than Kitty at the camp during the attack?
