I can't see I have anything major in common with Sally Rooney, like.
even if my interpretation of her books is wrong, university bores aren't worth writing about in the first place.
the subject matter of her books isn't of any interest to me as I said.
Jesus man, just stop talking about her if you have no interest then.

Sally Rooney's chosen career is also largely about getting validation.
and particularly from people I don't care for e.g. publishers, RTE, Irish Times, Colm Toibin types.
sadly once you go into that world that's your lot.
She wrote a few fiction books and made a principled stand about an issue, that's it.

She has barely any media presence for one of the best selling authors in the world, increasingly less as time goes by. She lives in Mayo and makes a point of not getting involved in any of that Colm Toibin shit you, the person who is proudly ignorant about her, have decided to foist upon her. You are making up a person that doesn't exist.

Sheesh if you love her so much why don't you marry her?

This is actually really bugging me now.

When I say something is "middle Ireland" I mean that the people expressing the opinion want nothing to change. They have gotten to where they are through some combination of luck, wealth, talent and hard work, they're there now, they recognize that there are problems in the world but they don't actually want it to change because it would affect them and how they live their fantastic life. Maybe they have pet causes that are personal to them that would tinker around the edges, but fundamentally the system works.

I've read two of the three Sally Rooney books and a common thread is how the world, as it is, is fucking people up, it's fucking up their personal lives, their work lives, their sex lives, their mental health, and how people relate to each other.

No, she's not writing outsider literature about mentally deranged lunatics, she's not writing sci-fi or fantasy describing the world as it could be, she's not writing counter-culture fiction about people who drop out and don't care what happens in the world because they built their own, and she's not openly calling for a revolution in this world as it exists, but to imply that her writing, which describes middle Ireland, is some kind of endorsement of it is just plain wrong.

Polite, apolitical, fiction reviewers can choose not to see that, and just talk about her good sentences and how they liked the emotions in it, and isn't it great how she's writing these love stories like a modern Jane Austen (an arch satirist btw, but you couldn't tell that from the tv adaptations) but that's on them.

Sally Rooney is very middle Ireland IMO. I thought the thumped thread on the Ordinary People TV series was a hoot and about as close to a consensus as thumped ever is ever likely to get.
Anyway I declare a ceasefire on Ms. Rooney's work.

Jesus man, just stop talking about her if you have no interest then.

right ho.

I said I declared a ceasefire on commenting on S----y R----y work yesterday morning but then Lili promptly started the whole thing going again and I kept responding to Lili's criticisms of me.

S---y R----y is regularly mentioned on this site by other folks and I responded.
.
now I am quite happy to stop at this point but if some folks want to waste time continuing this, I can.

RE: 'validation'
writers signed to major publishing houses want their work validated with critical praise and sales, that's par the course isn't it?

Lili probably remembers me saying I have a hard time getting excited about the fiction genre - if you read my posts now you know why.
If you really want I'll have a go at reading one of her books but if I come back and with a negative reaction what will happen? I've been through this before with a singer from Kent.

I never heard of Julie Bindel until a couple of hours ago.
so she's an old school lesbian feminist. not keen on identity politics or some trans stuff.
very anti sex work, anti porn, anti surrogacy etc.
her stance on men is OK.

the book Julie Bindel mentioned has an endorsement from a billionaire* white woman on the cover (*allegedly).
why a radical feminist would want an endorsement from an extremely wealthy person is hard to fathom.

Is she the one who got dropped from her publisher for saying a load of racist shit to Ash Sarkar on Twitter?

Stop press -
last night I read three 2021 S---y R-----y interviews, read two excerpts (first plus third novels), listened to a thirty minute video of her (interview plus her reading excerpts of her own works at a book festival)
read three lengthy synopses of each novel and two Marxist websites analyses of her books.

so not for the first time Lili actually did a good job explaining things. SR is a clever clogs and takes her writing very seriously and is a completely different person to her novel characters.
why she chose creative class folks suffering from poor decision making and messed up romantic relationships to make her social / class observations on is still lost on me.
BUT guess what? that's her idiom.
like everything else I 'just don't get' it shouldn't mean shit to anyone else if it's relevant to them.

when Lili took up the challenge I wondered why he got so annoyed with me but it was a worthwhile exercise. my mentioning Colm Toibin was a low blow and unfair - SR operates very differently.

that's all I have to say on this, unless someone wants to call me out on something else.
