General election 2020 (4 Viewers)

Hahaha - for sure. I hope the recount rumour stops, unless Th.P is losing, then recount everything.

edit: oh and on that topic, if one younger rep from an establishment party had stepped aside earlier to allow his transfers into the mix then the race would have probably ruled out one standout independent on transfers, but for some reason they've hung on and created a competition within their own representation. Lets hope they don't learn from this.

I really hope Pringle survives this round.

after witnessing the media coverage of the last few days, i'm left thinking
how little some things have changed in the last 25 years.

in terms of the make up of the candidates, media and people at the count
centres it was almost entirely white Irish people.
has there been much comment on this ?

it's comparable to Westminster in early 90's diversity wise.

there is something badly wrong if POC are excluded to this degree.
this is part of a wider problem e.g. RTE rarely cater for immigrants and
articles i read on ethnic minority folks lives in Ireland tend to be written
from an Irish journalist's view.

I think it's a bit of both
Media, journalism and politics are notoriously difficult careers to forge success in, for anyone.
Particularly for those without longstanding connections, family or otherwise.

But they also likely have the same silent prejudices that other industries have. So it's probably harder again.

But I don't even know how many immigrants of colour we have, and what real diversity would look like.
Maybe the next generation will do better, like Varadkar did.

For science bear in mind FF started with a +1 for the cc BUT the runner up in the ward was a FF so the result would be the same.

Meanwhile today the media seems to be either alan partridge or martin brennan depending who you are reading.

I always thought FF & FG would do whatever it takes to stop SF getting into power. Even form a government together & how ever else will go in on the deal.

I just had a Christoper Walken in the Dead Zone flash of a near-future newspaper headline " Taoiseach Mary Lou McDonald drowns in freak white water rafting accident in Dublin city centre"

Interesting listening to Richard Boyd Barrett this morning, he seems very unlikely to entertain a broad left coalition, and I can see a lot of the other independents following suit.
I get the impression that it's not idealogically impossible, but that while the experienced SF TDs are actually first class negotiators and politicians, the massive amount of newbies don't have the experience to let it descend into anything other than a massive shit show - which would be massively damaging for the left in the long run.

Like I can see FG playing the long game of pushing for a FF/SF coalition, to destroy FF, I can the likes of RBB pushing for another election. Let SF run more candidates and get the mandate to form a government. And if they cock it up, the independent left won't sink with them.
