other than that there's lots of tributes posted this Wednesday, huge amount
of interviews talking about old times and surprisingly - a lack of footage
of his other Tour stage wins.

i got lots of Poulidor suggestions off youtube today.
with Anquetil absent he started the 1965 Tour de France as
favourite only to be upstaged by first year pro
Felice Gimondi (29/9/1942 - 19/8/2019).
finishing second in the Tour to Anquetil, Gimondi and Merckx
(total 24 Grand Tour wins) in the Tour means you're one of the
greats yerself.
Gimondi's daughter Norma posted this 2 1/2 hour plus
clip of the 1965 race footage compiled from many sources.

i'm not sure if the famous short film Pour Un Malliot Jaune
about the '65 Tour is used here - don't think so but
haven't watched the whole thing.

Johnny Wheeler (1928 -16 November 2019)
A wing back, Wheeler started his football career with Tranmere before
signing for First Division Bolton in 1951. playing along side Nat Lofthouse
they lost the 1953 FA Cup final 4-3 to Blackpool ('The Matthews Final')
after leading 3-1.
he won his only full England cap in 1954 at Windsor Park.

in 1954 he joined recently relegated Liverpool and was a regular starter
(along side Billy Liddell and Ronnie Moran (Johnny's cousin !))
until losing his place in 1961-62 promotion season. he was released in
1963 aged 33 having never made an appearance for the Reds in Division One.

The story of and interview with Liverpool's oldest living captain

my knowledge of Liverpool FC in the fifties is poor.
After Liddell, Moran, Melia, Twentyman ( later legendary LFC scout) i'm struggling on
that eras players. so Johnny was unknown to me.

Damn!!! Second Pink Fairy in a few months

Martin Hooker

Daniel Leclercq (1949 - 22 November 2019)
Leclercq was the coach of Racing Club Lens when they won their only
French championship on 1998.
as a defender played his football for Valenciennes, before winning two titles
with Marsellies in early 70's. he then spent 9 years at back in the Nord
with Lens. before returning to Valenciennes and retiring in 1984.

known La Druide he also had two spells coaching Valenciennes.

other folks are covering the music side of things
( i like the Pink Fairies too)
so i'm giving the footballers and cyclists props.

i saw 1959 Tour de France winner Federico Bahamontes (b. 1928)
at the Vuelta - he looked well ( the commentators didn't notice him on the podium !)
he's actually the only Tour winner over 80 at the moment.
so hopefully we're OK for a while.

Vladimir Scmicer was in that Lens team that won the League in 1998
he was very good player then.

one of my big faults is leaving words out of sentences.
i've always done this.
e.g. "known (as) La Druide"

I love reading about these guys, except it sucks to hear them dying with almost no fanfare.
Those old time cyclists were heroes of mine too.
I had an Eddy Merckx bike back in the 70s; I thought I was the absolute shit.
And my uncle managed the Tailteann race team.

Father Time
That fucker has some serious form

apart from music there are so many worthless famous people really...

i agree, i want people to remember folks who brought excitement
to my life.
when Lens won the League i remember they flew home and went to
their stadium to celebrate.
it was full at 2 am or something !

when i was at the Tour of Ireland in 2007 in Kilkenny Eric Vanderaerden
cycled past me - Wow! (the Schleck's were touching distance from me
at the start and i wasn't bothered to approach them)

Merckx is someone i would have loved to begin with and but when he
dominated an AMAZING set of rivals it must have gotten boring though.
the end of career is very sad.
in '78 he was sick and injured constantly and hardly raced.
he couldn't finish races and stopped in May, only 32...

anyone who was into bike racing pre Kelly is shit cool in my opinion.
i'm just an arm chair fan myself.
imagine Shay Elliot setting off for France going into the total unknown
in the mid 50's.....
