What's the most you've ever paid for a record / cd? (1 Viewer)

the most i've paid for different formats (roughly) :
LP: less than 25 Euro.
CD: 20 Euro/ £16.
7": 13 Euro.
and i only paid that kind of money a handful of times.

20 Euro for a new album is taking the piss really - I mean why ??
I'd rather pay 10 Euro for a CD than 25 + Euro ppd for an LP to be honest.
i've bought new LP's this year on DIY labels for prices like $10-$12 or 11 Euro.

the most valuable things i have are some releases by Japanese bands.
but nothing worth over $ 100.

Have you ever made an album?

Duplication for even just 500 records will run 1200+

Mastering costs could be anything from 50 - 1000+

Studio costs 2000 if you are skimping on facilities.

360 euro to pay a single band member minimum wage for one week.

Deduct about 10% for promotional costs.

That's about 10 Euro a record before the band see a penny.

... and if you wanted to pay one band member minimum wage for a year you'd want to be charging about 45euro per record.

Records are fucking cheap. Bands working in european mainland will have less of these issues because people sometimes pay them for gigs and transport cost are reduced, but in fairness, being completely real about services rendered, an irish indie band probably could charge over 100 for a record if they were subscribing to any sort of model of human rights.

well i said 'DIY' Ann Post.
that means you cover your costs and don't plan to make money.
i'd imagine most people who release music on this forum do this and don't do it to make money.
even pro bands make nearly all their money off playing live and merch.

nearly all contemporary records i buy are in small pressings (often 300 copies )
apart from a few rappers, the current bands (say people under 50) i buy records by make little and probably nothing off music and definitely never earn a living off being in a band.
sounds familiar to many people reading this ? i wish a lot of my favourite bands were better known but they're not.

remember: there are many millions of people making cool music in the world they can't all make a living of being musicians.

nearly all records i buy by well known or pro musicians are reissues that came out decades ago.
most of the new vinyl i buy is on 7" EP's and more of the reissues tend to be the LP's.
the 7" EP 's rarely cost more than 6 Euro. i still buy lots of CD's, Tapes and CD-rom releases

i'm on benefit and never earned anywhere near 360 Euro p.w. when i was working

feel free to dispute anything I've said.
i'm just very picky about how my money is spent.

in reference to my comment on another thread that it would be good to have more bands
from Europe come here :
i was also going to say that a lot of people are being charitable coming here at all due to the isolation of Ireland - but i thought everyone knew that already.
anywhere in mainland Europe will have more touring bands.
