the brother had one living in his bathroom in melbourne until it jumped on him one day, and it lost a leg in the ensuing panic before being thrown outside, where it was probably eaten by a bird

Keeping an enormous, scary spider in your gaff to fight off other enormous, deadly, scary spiders. No thanks, Australia. I'll stick to wasps and midges.

Not that unusual - a standard Irish house spider (which I'd never seen in my life until about 5 years ago).
