The Future is Electric: Go-Eco at Electric Picnic 2016

#GreenerPicnic

· Electric Picnic to reduce festival-related greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2016

· BYE Eco Campsite capacity expands from 900 to 1,500 people

· Official bus partners added to Electric Picnic

· Increased green messengers & Every Can Counts angels

· Cup deposit refund scheme extended to every bar this year

Pledging to keep Electric Picnic bright into the future, the festival aims to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. With the support of Ireland’s brightest Picnickers, the rolling lawns of Stradbally Hall will create eco-history. Being GREEN is at Electric Picnic’s very wiring, and this year the current is set to be stronger than ever.

Following the publication of The Show Must Go On report, Electric Picnic organisers had a lightbulb moment, to participate in the Festival Vision: 2025 pledge to reduce the festival-related greenhouse gas emissions by 50%.

Ensuring that The Future Is Electric, eco-friendly initiatives have been expanded this year. Together festival partners Friends of the Earth, festival organisers, sponsors and YOU the Picnickers can unite and make a difference ensuring that The Show Must Go On for years to come!

Going green doesn’t just start when you get your wristband, you can do your bit by car sharing to Stradbally or hopping on a bus; Electric Picnic is teaming up with Bus Éireann and Marathon Coaches, as our Official Bus Partners, to minimise the impact of our travel on the environment. Or you can even go that extra mile by pedalling your way to the Picnic while raising charitable funds with RaboDirect Tour de Picnic.

Pitch your tent with like-minded individuals at the Be Your Environment Eco Campsite where you can stay in a creative and tranquil environment. In 2015, the 900 person strong BYE Eco Campsite booked up in a record breaking 35 minutes! This year sees its expansion to accommodate 1,500 people who want to live the eco dream together. There you will benefit from the all new sort-at-source waste management system Niftybins, as well as eco art, eco discussions, and eco workshops.

Friends of the Earth’s Green Messengers will be ensuring that your environmental footprint is as light as possible when the festival gets going. From your first drink, you and the environment can benefit and win prizes by simply putting your cans in the right bin while helping to keep Electric Picnic squeaky clean with Every Can Counts. Every Can Counts Bin Angels will return this year, increasing in celestial force from 16 to 30 people strong. Last year 4,400 litres of aluminium were collected – an incredible feat and a credit to the participation of Picnickers!

Making even the smallest changes can make a big difference. By putting one plastic bottle into the right bin you can save enough energy to light a 60 watt lightbulb for 6 hours. Your pocket can also benefit from these small changes with the Cup Deposit Refund Scheme, when you return a plastic cup (sold at every bar this year), you can get your €0.20 back. Leaving you no excuse to recoup some money just in time for the sale of next year’s Electric Picnic tickets. With just 1100 cups you could have enough to join us again next year!

If you’ve recycled too many cups and cans the night before you can shake off the fuzzy head at the Global Green; Electric Picnic’s pop-up eco-village of activists, artists, makers, musicians, foodies, slam poets and hackers, brought together by Cultivate, the sustainability collective based in Cloughjordan Ecovillage. Now in its ninth year, Global Green is the conscious heartbeat of Electric Picnic; a cutting edge nexus of green ideas and conviviality, showcasing new musical acts, offering great local food and introducing radical solutions for a future that works. We keep a finger on Ireland’s musical pulse offering daytime electro, acoustic and night-time dance beats. Your food needs are covered with our Local Food Project; it’s yummy and sourced from within a 50-mile radius of Cloughjordan. With spoken word for social change, engaged art and discussions, Global Green is accelerating the transition to a low carbon and resilient future.

Got a taste for the local produce? Gather the finest local products the Electric Picnic Farmers’ Market. For something a little stronger without the ethical headache, all tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar and bananas stocked are Fairtrade.

Clear your head by engaging with thought provoking discussions held at Mindfield for example, an exclusive 2016 parliamentary proposition motion by Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan hosted by Rubberbandit’s Blind Boy Boat Club.

Feeling crafty? Learn how to upscale unwanted materials and learn a forgotten skill from professional craftspeople at Greencrafts.

Or if you prefer to watch recycling in action catch the winners of Ireland’s premiere recycled fashion competition Bank of Ireland Junk Kouture strut their stuff on stage at Trailer Park.

// Be Your Environment Eco Campsite //

It is no surprise that our Be Your Environment Eco Campsite sold out in 35 minutes last year, it’s a tranquil, clean setting which is much sought after. The B.Y.E Eco Campsite is an environmental management co-operative made up an eclectic mix of eco warriors, artists and everything in between. Throughout the festival campers will be welcome to take part in a variety of creative activities sourced from the materials created by the festival.

// Green Messengers //

Festival partners Friends of the Earth promote awareness of environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices. They have despatched the Green Messengers all across the beautiful land of Stradbally. Green Messengers have the dual purpose of educating willing festival goers and acting as gatekeepers to their own allotted bins, monitoring them for contamination and righting any rubbish bin etiquette. With Green Messengers now being stationed at the festivals campsites Oisin Coghlan, Director of Friends of the Earth spoke of the benefits of this: "Campsites are the ideal place to continue to spread the recycling message. Campsites are people's homes for the weekend and since we all recycle at home there's no reason why a festival should be any different."

// Farmers Market //

Local food producers and distributors will be selling their wares at the festival for the first time this year at Electric Picnic’s Farmers’ Market in the Mindfield area. This will ensure that local businesses will benefit from the Stradbally visitors and symbiotically festival goers will benefit from delicious local produce.

// Greencrafts //

Greencrafts is as carbon neutral as they come, with the entire site powered by hand or solar power (fingers crossed it’s the later). There you can chat with tradespeople as well as watching and learning from them yourself. From felt hats to iron pokers you can even bring home something you have crafted yourself from forgotten or traditional methods.

// The Show Must Go On Report //

Conceived out of a collective wish to reduce the environmental impact that festivals make and in conjunction with the 2015 Paris Climate Change talks, The Show Must Go On report was published. The report aims to create an industry-wide approach to reducing environmental impacts and promoting action through Festival Vision: 2025 Pledge –A commitment from festivals of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2015.

Dive into Electric Picnic @ Stradbally Lake

Submerge yourself in the festival’s all new lakeside swimming area

Pack your swimming costume! Electric Picnic has now opened its ‘lanes’ to festival goers on land and water. The Lake is the perfect setting for Olympic swimmers or arm-band enthusiasts to see a new side to the festival. The new area will be located in the idyllic surroundings of the Stradbally Hall estate. Knock off the cobwebs after the night before and take a refreshing dip in an area surrounded by a copse of ancient oak and ash trees.

To reach The Lake, follow the signposted riverside path leading from the Jimi Hendrix Campsite area daily (see times below). Straight from Rio 2016, Picnic lifeguards will be on duty to watch out for everyone’s safety over the course of the weekend.

Adults with the much sought after Electric Picnic ticket can participate as long as they are a competent swimmer, while kids can splish and splash when accompanied by a responsible adult who can swim.

Picnickers will have the opportunity to swim in the exclusive ancestral lake that is steeped in history. The course of the Crooked River was moved to power a mill on the land of Stradbally Hall by monks from the local Franciscan Monastery during the late 15th century. The manmade lake was then created by the ancestral owners of Stradbally Hall: the Cosby family during the early 18thcentury. Since then it has been maintained by the family, including a memorable excavation during the 1870s when a hundred men with a hundred wheelbarrows who worked in the Malting factory from Stradbally town manually dredged the lake. For 2016, The Lake will be open to the Electric Picnic public for the first time, allowing Picnickers to splash into history!

So put the towel down and take a dip.

Body&Soul at Electric Picnic 2016

Now in its thirteenth year at Electric Picnic, the Body&Soul village continues to showcase a carefully-curated array of music, healing therapies, workshops, art installations, decadent spa treatments in an explosion of colour, joy and late-night gatherings, from the intimate to the epic. Year on year, Body&Soul creates a beguiling landscape of twinkling lights, immersive experiences and enchanting moments of unexpected magic in the fields of Stradbally.

A meticulous mix of music descends on the Body&Soul Stage, Earthship Stage, Peace Pagoda and Bandstand with acts as eclectic as Ezra Furman, one of the most compelling, thrilling and unpredictable performers of the moment whose stage presence is matched only the genius of his tracks and band; the languid, chilled out electronica of Brooklyn based MOTHXR; the featherlight acoustic pop and luscious song-based storytelling of New York’s Eleanor Friedberger; the eccentric, earthy folk of Bristol’s finest This Is The Kit and the ambient/electronica, alt-rock swagger of Belfast’s Girls Names.

Body&Soul is a haven for the musically adventurous and sonically curious. This year, there is bravery and brilliance across all stages, from Island Records’ favourite Whilk & Misky, whose blend of brooding electronics with guitar and throaty vocals fuses folk, electronica, techno and the Blues, to the psych-influenced rock and blissful melodies of Dublin based Overhead, The Albatross.

The flamboyance and vivaciousness of Ninos du Brasil will be known to anyone who has previously caught this Italian duos’ high-octane set before. The increasingly popular Talos, whose voice has been called “arguably the most beautiful in Ireland” will be a treat for fans of ambient singer-songwriters.

The ever-popular Donal Dineen returns once again to Body&Soul, a spiritual home for one of the most respected, daring and visionary artists in Ireland. Irish acts are always central to the bill, strengthened further this year by the alt-wonky pop of Myles Manley, the trad-tinged folk of Carlow brothers Ye Vagabonds, the masterful multi-instrumentalist and one of Europe’s leading drummers R.S.A.G’s and the heart-hitting synth melodies with punk/funk style bass lines of Plutonic Dust.

A Body&Soul gathering wouldn’t be complete without a Mother party. Have your sequins at the ready and prepare for some glittery debauchery with some of Ireland’s best hand-picked DJs. A huge hit at venues and festivals across the country, Sing Along Social joins Body&Soul for another outing of those hits you can’t help sing along to. Other acts set to descend on the Body&Soul village include Toby Kaar, Áine Cahill, Elephant, Ocho, Mario Batkovic and Elm.

An exciting new addition to the ever-changing village is this year is The Haunted Music Hall, a magical and romantic world of vintage sounds and visuals. Using Victorian, Edwardian and early-Modernist inspired art and decor, this immersive antique world will be a dizzying party of great music and non-stop dancing.

Among the many unique experiences at Body&Soul, the Bog Cottage, is a charming retreat for acoustic sessions with jazz, gypsy folk and open mic, while Earth Spirit return to create a beautiful environment using sustainable, natural materials, transforming the Body&Soul village into an interactive, thought-provoking and inspiring space to learn from and engage with. The light installations and carefully selected lineup for the Peace Pagoda creates a weekend long installation of bespoke visuals, electronic music, conversations and cutting edge acts.

By day or by night, Body&Soul is a place to wander and explore, with unexpected surprises around every corner and enchanted nooks and crannies to hide away in. The Immerse Spa Experience will revitalise and heighten the senses, restoring radiance and vitality to festival goers; unwind in an open air hot tub with your loved ones or sink into the healing waters of a seaweed bath.

The legendary DJs in the trees return, while live music, pop ups and installations enchant below. Wander to the Zen Gardens where an array of hand-picked therapists will be offering everything from Indian Head Massages and Tibetan Oracle to Sound Healing. Step into a healing workshop of Tibetan Yoga, AcroYoga, Hatha Yoga and much more.

Follow the lights deep into pulsing heartbeat of Electric Picnic, the Body&Soul Village.

yeah, its dreadful. I'm going down for friday and saturday. Can't be arsed heading back down after the hurling on sunday. Scanning the lineups for those days its gonna be hard to find stuff to watch a lot of the time. It seems all the half-decent stuff is on in the middle of the night (I'll stretch to 2am for LCD soundsystem, but usually I can't do past mightnight, cos I'm old).

Can't recall the last time I discovered a new (to me) band at EP that I liked. For the past few years its been a case of going to see bands you've seen loads of times before.

And missing sunday I only miss 1 band I'd like to see - Phosphorescent. And I've seen them 6 or 7 times before anyway.

jim bolloxhead carroll was fishing for some scandal earlier on twitter trying to find out if anyone was being asked to play for free. salty dog stage is getting pointed at. meh.

line up ain't for me anyway. last time I went they had people like Malkmus and Neko Case playing in the middle tier.

made a half-arsed attempt to sell my ticket yesterday but it didn't work. So, fuck it, I'll head down. Theres a few decent acts on today and another handful tomorrow. Girls Names clash with LCD Soundsystem so I'll have to wait til LCD's next reunion tour to see them.

Prince Rama are on at 2am on monday fucking morning. What bullshit scheduling is that? When you consider some of the bullshit they have on in far more sociable slots, it beggars belief they'd go to the hassle of bringing someone over and sticking them on when no one is bothered anymore.

I'm playing an early gig on Sunday and have the rest of the day to wander about.

I'll check out Toots and the Maytals, Lana Del Ray and because there doesn't appear to be any choice, New Order.

I can't find a stage time list for Sunday, just a huge general info dump
