hi peeps.

if i’m charging for work done for a german company, but i’m getting them to pay me in ireland, how does it all work with the tax man? as far as i understand, i don’t charge vat, but i also don’t owe it? that doesn’t seem to make any sense, but i’m probably missing some aspect of it. anyone got any experience with all of this?

thanks...

you also would be obliged to check the validity of their vat number and record the vat number on the invoice you give the company for your own records.

the reason to check is that between 2 vat registered people, one pays vat and the other would be refunded the vat on the one transaction but as it is across borders, this does not apply as if it did (you'd pay vat to the irish revenue and the customer would be refunded the vat from the german revenue which would be unfair to the germans so to counteract this, the vat between 2 vat registered people in difference countries is 0% intra community transaction.
