@ann post
Have you done much research on the feasibility of building a shipping container home down the country?
I mean either as a standalone, or as an extension or an outbuilding on an existing property?

Are they more trouble than they're worth?

Another thing I'd love to know is how expensive a new septic system is to install and how much of it you could do yourself?

More like solid, you can hang anything off it - brick or stone cladding - stick anything in it (specifically thinking of an entire side full height glazing). Stack another container on top it you feel like it. Stick a roof deck up there. Or a water tank. Or a fecking hot tub.

Wood is amazing and wonderful, but keeping everything square and figuring loading and all that is not attractive for me.
The 2x8 lad did turn my head though.

That said, anyone got any idea what 2x4 and 4x4 costs currently? Like even roughly.

Plus..think about all the drilling to attach the cladding ..endless points of ingress.. and also..condensation/ventilation/rust prevention yadda yadda yadda

If you build something from timber.. ventilation is baked in! Well it would be if it was me building it heh.

But sure lookit, don't let me put you off, thats just my take on it. Id be after handiness and easy maintainance above all else . I wouldnt be looking for a jacussi on the roof

Don't steal my sunshine!

Good video
I will say that you don't need to reinforced the sides if you go full height with your openings
Stacking the containers in any way other than how they were designed is of course dumb
Pier foundations are cheap as chips
I work with architects every day and they are the worst fuckers in the world for building stuff that's impractical or too expensive. Even though they make some good points here.

"You'd have to be naive and arrogant to do this" Well, check those fucking boxes!

Apes together strong
I mean knock it if you like, but building and renovating existing structures is about the earliest form of creativity there is; after figuring out food source and getting someone decent to ride you.

Taking something that is in your brain only as an idea, and manifesting it into existence in the world as a real, usable thing. Harnessing materials and overcoming every obstacle & difficulty (including your own stupidity) in the way.
It's thrilling on a level deep inside yourself.
I think anyway.

You'd be better of starting with a frame made of RSJ's in the shape that you want ..then clad it to look like a container . Now yer talking

I wasn't knocking it. Apes together strong is a good thing. It's from Planet of the Apes

Stupid quote business sorry

You need to reinforce every single cut out you make and probably brace the entire thing if you're putting one on top of another, they're not designed to have windows and doors cut out of them so they are significantly weakened when done

I don't agree with this. Unless you're stacking containers on top of each other, then picking them up with a crane and putting them on a ship to China.

I mean, containers are very strong. They do bend and twist depending on the weather and how their sitting, so often the doors are a bit wonky, but that's easily dealt with if you know to deal with it.

I don't think that's true.
Nah, it is. I recognise Caesar's quote. Dave knows his movies.

@ernesto - The majority of the strength is from the box - the panels at the side only add something extra.
if you go full height you're only going to need two side posts, which you'd need as nailers/fixing anyways
You'd be well good putting an 8' wide full height slider in there with two 4"x4" PT lumber posts either side.
Putting a 4' x 4' window in there would be a legitimate pain in the hole.

the US has mad cheap lumber
with the sort of youtube videos i watch, i've seen quite a few where they visit american lumber yards. they'd make you cry, comparing them to irish ones.
even big lumberyards which specialise in purely reclaimed lumber.

i have been known to relax of an evening watching good ole boys slabbing logs in videos lasting over half an hour.
