The Russian invasion of Ukraine (4 Viewers)

That was me, I've been following him for a while. He's quite sick sadly, so his posts are a bit variable in frequency.
Vlad emphasized the disenfranchisement of a large section of the population, "Putin deals with The Politics, we deal with our lives.". But I think there's also Make Russia Great Again happening alongside that, which Putin is trying to feed into. Along with "Gay people are terrible", which is a standard goto.

Yeah, I think this is a pretty good summary. Like what you just said is all the exact same stuff that is going on in USA, except over there they have the illusion of pretending to have different leaders every 4 years that might try and change things - basically put Trump back in charge and let him change election laws and put his own people in charge of the court system (which he already did), the military, the police etc and in like 10 years you get Russia.

Really top notch stuff here.
Thanks

Will watch the other one when I'm less tired.

I’m reading Chekhov again and still struck by how special the Russians were when it came to understanding the human condition; like as much as any society ever has.
And then the cataclysm of the Revolution and Stalinism where thought itself was policed by death, all leading to where we are now – a society that cannot be participated in by its citizens, and there is no objective truth to be had within its walls.
The whole thing looks broken beyond repair.

Speaking of the horrors of Soviet Russia, great podcast series on Soviet Georgia here, would recommend.

content kinda varies from "I don't know who any of these people are" to interesting discussions on day to day life in a post-soviet country.

The Russians have their own specialist undersea demo guys. Probably the Chinese too.
Makes way more sense for the US to do this than the idea that the Russians would do it. I mean they are perfectly capable of shooting off their own dick, but harder to see it in this case.

Another catastrophic strategic error by Putin - he had the US beaten into submission on this. They admitted defeat. Had the Germans fully on board and ... well we all know what happened.

Horrible environmental hazard caused by the US.
Not sure how this plays as a welcome-to-Nato message to the Swedes. Presumably not well.

But if everyone is wrong here, is this not a net win for the leave-it-in-the-ground types? Fewer pipelines, less extraction? Or at least more likely to keep Germany honest on its reorientation toward renewables.
Truly grasping for a silver lining here. Or in anything to do with this entire horrific year.

these seem very interesting - thanks @Lili Marlene

---well, I'm only starting into the second one, but, like... so far so good!

Kind of looks like the big losers on this particular thing are poor people in European countries that have been hit with rocketing heating bills. I don't really think Nord Stream 2 would have put less emphasis on the need to shift to renewables anyway, but it definitely would have kept gas bills cheaper.

Glad you're liking it! I stumbled across it somewhere completely random.

Some of the episodes are about historical people I've never heard of and a bit beyond me but there's lots of interesting stuff in there. There's a fascinating episode about the radically different approaches to medicine with doctors trying to negotiate the gap between their training in Soviet times and the western approaches they have to take on in the 90s.

I've ended up with another huge booklist from it.

Emmanuel Todd was the guy who accurately predicted the specifics of the fall of the soviet union back in the mid-80s... he says we’re already in world war 3. worth a read.

I mean, it's obviously beyond a joke at this point
Prigozhin is on Telegram on the regular calling for all the actual military leaders to be called to account" - by which he means killed

As incredible as it is, Russia is getting worse

Russia having an absolute nightmare in Vuhledar
Losing tanks and armor. Men getting slaughtered. And the ones that survive are called deserters.

Russia has never cared how many men it loses. It's barbaric, but it has worked for them at times. Says a lot about a country though.
