What movie did you watch last night? (9 Viewers)

Hereditary best movie ever.

Babadook wasnt that good

I can't remember what movies we watched at the weekend. They must have been gash

Watched The Matrix trilogy over the last few nights. The original is still great but fucking hell, what happened with the sequels? I saw the second one in the cinema and hated it at the time. Tried to give it a fair chance this time and it’s possibly worse than I remembered. Classic George Lucas/Peter Jackson effect of too much success, money, and Yes Men leading to a complete watering down and destruction of a good idea. The third one is a bit better but that ending is bollocks. Can’t wait for the new one.

I remember having a screaming argument in Bruxelles after the second one came out. We agreed with each other in that it was incomprehensibly shite, but my argument was "it's a trilogy, wait for the third one!"

The first one meant so much to people, the second one seemed like a betrayal.

But at the time I was hopeful the third one would tie things up and it would all make sense. It tried, but it didn't really do it for me.

Macnas setting of Gilgamesh - kinda fascinating, 22 mins art movie/poem with a 4000 year old poem - last evening it can be watched for free this evening btw

Prisoners of the Ghostland. Fucking bonkers film where Cage plays Snake Plisskin in a post-apocalyptic Japan that's a Western and Samurai film at the same time. It's mental. Close to classic Cage though. As Steo said above, more about visuals than plot.

Cop Shop. This was actually real good, Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo are great cause they just play their usual shit and do it well. I might have been biased because in the intro they basically just use the Magnum Force theme as the music, and it sounds fucking AMAZIN in the cinema. But anyway there's actually a lot of really nice style to this film, and it's not totally predictable - good job!

That Shang-Chi film thing. Yet more Marvel drivel. In fairness the actors did pretty good here, but then you have Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh so hard to go wrong with these kind of actors. And Ben Kingsley, even for phoned in shit like this he's still good, even when he's given fucking nothing to do.
The 'comedic asides' in the film are really terrible, just utter dogshit really. Just like the plot, story, and dialogue as a whole. Actually in fairness you get the impression the story could have been alright with the right treatment, but this is just more Marvel universe fucking shit.
Did I stay to watch the credits? Did I fuck.

Some recent things...

  • "Sins of the Fleshapoids" - moderately entertaining but not recommended
Their every whim catered to by robot servants known as fleshapoids, the citizens of the future spend their time luxuriating in the sensual pleasures of food, sex, and sleep. One day, however, a fleshapoid named Xar (Bob Cowan) experiences the unquenchable desire to do a little luxuriating of his own. Rising up against his owner (Gina Zuckerman), Xar teams up with fellow android Melenka (Maren Thomas). Soon, the robot Bonnie and Clyde are battling for their freedom against the tyranny of scantily clad overlords Prince Gianbeno (George Kuchar) and Princess Vivianna (Donna Kerness).
  • "The Last Picture Show" - never saw it before, loved it
  • "Arcadia" - that recent British folk horror thing, I found it a bit boring
  • "The Wall" - about the mistreatment of young prisoners in a Turkish prison. It was ok.
  • "The Tied Up Balloon" - an enjoyable enough Bulgarian film from the 60s
A barrage balloon appears unexpectedly over a Bulgarian village. The startled villagers decide to knock it down with a fusillade. But the balloon flies off to the mountains. The villagers, armed to their teeth, set off after it.
  • "Out in the Open" - Kind of a Spanish western-style thing about a kid on the run from a prick landlord/boss type. It was quite good.
  • Stroszek - good, not great

Saw the Many Saints yesterday, thought it was pretty good as a character-driven story. I'm not obsessed with the Sopranos or anything though.

Today saw the new Bond film. It's nearly 3 hours long, 2 hrs 43 minutes I think. I'd say about 43 minutes of that is good, the other 2 hours just more shite – it is a bit of a mixture, and I'm pretty sure I'd have an easy time cutting at least an hour of overlong pointless material. Lea Seydoux is class, but then again she is a ride after all. The bad guy is fucking useless, and not through any real fault of Remi Malik, he's just given absolutely fuck all to work with. Waltz gets more material for the all of 10 minutes or so he's on the screen. In fact the bad guy's 'henchman' (Cyclops?) is more interesting than the bad guy, a bit like Battista was the best thing about the previous film.
There's an awful lot of fucking nonsense in the 'story' that really shows how dated all this Bond shit is. Like for instance he goes to Cuba for a sequence, and really is the most obvious fucking spy in the world in Cuba, but it's like the authorities just 'don't notice'. However, there are also some good things they do with this one that are pretty new to Bond, these are part of the 43 mins or so that are actually pretty good.
What's interesting though is that it seems impossible for them to get away from the OHMSS Bond film as being the peak of the franchise – there are many tributes to it here and maybe they should have just stopped making these films back then.
Anyway, I would say it's the only semi-good Bond film since Casino Royale, which was class, but it's really time they just ended this shit altogether. It's already gone on far too long and is utterly out of date.

I don't think I've seen an entire Bond movie since I went to see The Living Daylights in the cinema. I was thinking of checking out one or two of the Daniel Craig ones but... nah, you've put me off.

Today I watched:
The Traveler (1974, Kiarostami). It's about a young lad who's getting in trouble in school and his plans to go to this soccer match. It's so good, I loved it.
My Childhood and My Ain Folk - two shortish, ultra-grim things from the 70s about two unfortunate kids in a Scottish mining village in the 40s. Excellent but definitely no craic. There's a third installment too.
