'Where There's a Will There's A Way' - the Pop Group, 1980. [Originally released on a split 7" w/ the Slits.

This is the most post-punk thing I've seen and heard today. The right kind of lunatics. That fuckin' bass sound. Withering sax death [kindred with James Chance most obviously, I suppose]. Black-clad bloke dancing in front of multiple tv sets. This is quite tight for them... got that terrace chant vibe creeping in which I like. Righteous mothefuckers. Skronk warriors.

Members went onto feature in Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy [and others... Glaxo Babies for one]... more on them later, no doubt. Bristol - crucial post-punk city.

PYLON part of Athens GA music doc from 1983?

first time I got to hear them in early days of youtube.
there was also a concert filmed of their 'last' show in 1983 that I can't find now.

Gorgeous accents... she sounds like something out of the movies. They seem like righteous folks. Bands forming in art school - definitely a post-punk theme. Athens, GA... another key city.

Plus a recently-discovered-now-favourite

Great stuff, SP. That's completely new to me. I am erratically listening to stuff put up here [so haven't got to everything yet].

cheers Gary that made my made my day!

this thread is going well with a few old faves plus a few things (like this) that I wouldn't have anticipated

Lol I've never seen that Pop Group clip before. Mazin'

Kind of renders every band the Quietus likes redundant doesn't it?

THE POP GROUP clip was from Belgian TV.

was thinking how similar the CAMEO song you posted sounds to
A CERTAIN RATIO's - I Need Someone Tonight (1983)
this was their first single after a conscious decision to move in more commercial direction similar to NYC funk.

tying in with black funksters coming under the influence of Euro electronic groups is Detroit lad Juan Atkins first and IMO best record.

I had heard of guy from Detroit radio -

another small connection was BIG BLACK bassist Dave Riley (1960-2019) who had worked in a studio where George Clinton recorded and had credits on 80-81 FUNKADELIC / PARLIAMENT material.

Cool song! Never heard that Cybertron track before.

here's the Prince Electrifying Mojo connection, because there had to be one, right?

I see your Cybotron with a different Cybotron from Oz, (they predated punk but this 1980 gem has a nice post-punk funk vibe to it)

That is crazy good. I have always slept on the Pop Group, never really liked what I'd heard previously.

Bit of a Chrome/Helios Creed vibe going down here? Demented punk mulch. Pleasing.

apparently the gig of theirs that was filmed at the Hacienda was one of those early nights at the club where hardly anyone was there - as in about 10 punters.
For the record this band featured Chrislo Haas (RIP) ex DAF and Baete Bartel (ex MANIA D w/ Gundrun Gut and Bettina Koster later of MALARIA!)

Baete Bartel (ex MANIA D w/ Gundrun Gut and Bettina Koster later of MALARIA!)
And the original line up of Einstürzende Neubauten. She is on early live recordings (at least one, 1st April 198 at the Moon Club, Berlin). Blixa, NU Unruh, Bartel and Gudrun Gut were the original line up (no FM Einheit or Mark Chung, nor Alex Hacke for that matter). I have a copy of that gig, it was originally released by Blixa on his Eisengrau tape label. It’s… grainy. The women had left by the time they were going to record Kalte Sterne or Kollaps.

(guess what my specialist subject is?)

I either forgot about them being in NEUBAUTEN or maybe even never knew that but certainly haven't heard that tape.

here's MANIA D in a doc from 1980

Wow - their first time here?
I am not really up with what they have done since the 90's other than it's more 'songwriting orientated'.
I think they played here before? Actually the press release says first time in 17 years so there's the answer... They put on a great show- Blixa is a great front man...
