BREXIT (10 Viewers)

Jeremy Gilbert on the Politics Theory Other podcast has a pretty good take on the Corbyn era and Labour's current travails, I reckon:
Yeah, good listen, I'd buy most of it.

The Brits trying to find a way of being nationalist that isn't basically crying over their lost empire and the time they won the World Cup though.... Christ that's an ask. More likely theyll just lash out at everyone as they spiral downwards and the UK breaks apart...

Corbyn being too internationalist in outlook rings true to me, i think we feel it pretty strongly over here what with the whole "IRA supporter" smear. I'd imagine every Muslim in the UK feels it as well.

I thought one of the left critiques of Corbyn was that he wasn't internationalist enough? There was book published at some point criticising him for his "Stalinist" socialism-in-one-country tendencies. (I didn't read it but I read the piece a friend of mine wrote about it.)

Though you'd have to question how in good faith it was when attaching "Stalinist" to him, fairly toxic terminology even if you understand the context of its use. Unless you're talking about the tankie perspective I suppose.

I feel like that is over thinking. When he was looking great they started pushing the anti-semite thing, in a country that is three generations deep into ww2 propaganda. It never had to be true, it just had to be a rumour and people who've been brow beaten with that stuff all their life instincts kick in, the end.

This critique is new to me. Hard to square the UK with the USSR to the point where you can call someone Stalinist and for it to make sense?

seems more of an analogy than a comparison. though you need to already have a fair bit of contextual knowledge to even understand the analogy. how many normal schmoes even know what “socialism in one country” is a reference to? may as well have called him a zinovievite or an anti-revisionist hoxhaist or some other similar commie-talmudic insult

Well yeah, if this is just socialists falling out over who is and isn't socialist enough there's a damn good reason i haven't come across it before.

To be fair, it's always been clear that Corbyn was a Stalinist, although admittedly this can be hard to spot because the more obvious Nazism can obscure it.

What's amazing to me is how few people talk about his long running support of Pol Pot, and the fact he spend his childhood summers living with Idi Amin.

probably all made up but still made me lol

I'm not sure if I'm seeing confirmation bias type stuff here, but I got the feeling that a large number of English Boomer musicians were very Brexity.
I remember Mike Oldfield giving an interview talking about living in Monaco, Spain, Ibiza, the Bahamas (?) segued directly into pro Brexit talk without blinking, which was good.

Presumably they're sitting in their gaff in Portugal thinking they might get a tax break.

Always felt a strong dickhead energy off Bruce.

This has really fuckered the music biz here though. And obvs also in Ireland. It's really disappointing. Luckily for me I'm rubbish at music, but it's affected my work and my friends' work in a bad way.

Daltry was a brexiter as well.

Never liked The who anyway.

anyway, apparently that GB news channel is dying on its feet. andrew neil has already walked away from it. they're claiming he's just taking annual leave, which would be curious timing.

my wife read his bio/memoir, and said he doesn't come across as a humble man at all in it.

In school I had a French mate who loved Maiden to bits, whereas I was suspicious of their jingoistic ways. Obviously he didn't understand the Anglo-Irish context I was getting at. As my mate got older and more naturalised he began to understand why Maiden put me on edge a bit. Yeah, they are fun riffs, but...

I like the Who, but that generation are what they are
