Miscellaneous Articles You Should Read (3 Viewers)

What I love about that article is how they represent this complete unawareness of Verhoeven basically being an arch-satirist. Like, some of the shit he managed to get into films is total genius, it's also as subtle as a boot in the bollocks, and fuck it's hilarious that so many people don't get that shit.

It's like watching Schumacher's falling down and not realising that actually, basically everybody is the bad guy.

In 1999, “Wild Wild West” was the song of the summer.

Lol. Yeah I was 15 in 1999 and it was at best a novelty track even the most tuned out person tolerated as being a silly song by a likable dad.
It’s all very american. There’s acts on that list I’ve never heard of, never mind the songs.

It also totally negates how over time songs are rediscovered via ads, shows and movies and also that as you grow you are likely to be exposed to more music from lots of eras. I know it's not meant to be taken too seriously but Americans have a very rigid, consumerism focused perception of generational change.

And as John says Wild, Wild West was a joke of a song, even at the time.

A load of '50s and '60s pop, soul and doo wop was recycled in the 1980s. My earliest musical memories are of the Dubliners, Reet Petite and Jackie Wilson and Beatles songs.

A more interesting phenomenon to me is how Tiktok is changing things. Kids know short clips of songs from many eras.

I find there's lots of catchy pop songs (sometimes silly, sometimes actually quite good), that are attached to blockbuster movies, that get massive play for the summer they're on. Then they tend to disappear without a trace. Having a single in a Big Movie seems to lead to a very different trajectory than just having a popular single. I know I hear a Micheal Jackson song every day, but I rarely hear a James Bond theme tune from anyone.

So I would say Wild Wild West is a bad choice for this study. I bet loads more people would know "Summertime".

Amid murmurs that opponents might crash his Zoom talk, Professor Reed and D.S.A. leaders agreed to cancel it, a striking moment as perhaps the nation’s most powerful Socialist organization rejected a Black Marxist professor’s talk because of his views on race.
