People Who Died (7 Viewers)

Harry didn't like the attention his bravery brought.
he firmly believed it was a no brainer to the risk his life to
save his teamates, manager, a pregnant women and her baby daughter.
23 people, many his team mates, died. he could never accept the
praise after.

unfortunately Harry had the misfortune to be injured when Man Utd
were in cup finals or winning the league

apparently Bobby Charlton was a much more open person until
Munich but when his friends died that part of Bobby went.

only a few months after Munich Norn Iron reached the last 8 of the
1958 World Cup in Sweden.
Harry Gregg was named best goalkeeper of the tournament.

first N.I. had knocked out Italy in the qualifiers.

Harry made a string of important saves in the win 1-0 over the
Czechoslovakians. (injured, he missed the second more famous
play off win for second place in the group over Czechoslovakia
9 days later),

Norn Iron were brilliant at upsetting West Germany over the years
(then 1954 World Champs and semi finalists in 1958) but.... the
2-2 draw in their third group match in Sweden isn't on you tube.

finally i'd say looking for footage of him playing for Man Utd.
brought home to me how lumbered he was with the legacy of
Munich. huge amount of material related to the disaster and an
absence of footage of him playing

I didn't know that story about Gregg going back to the plane. And when someone mentioned baby, I wondered if it was John Lukic. From @nuke terrorist's post, it's clear that it was.
Some man. RIP.

This is a bit of a shock

That was an urban legend that had some legs, before the internet anyways

Which member of the '89 Arsenal league-winning squad was on the Munich plane?
And then some smart arse would tell you his mom was pregnant when the plane crashed

All we had really were books back then and if you looked up the lady's name, it checked out

John Lukic was born in 1960 so it would have been a long pregnancy !
i knew about that urban myth but didn't hear it until 2000's so it
was well debunked by then.

BBC NI news did by far the best TV tribute to Harry Gregg.
as their main news story they gave a well rounded picture of someone who
was best known for something he wished had never happened.

Barry Hulshoff (1946 - 16 February 2020)
Ajax (1966-1977) and Holland football defender.
another name i should have known but didn't.

Hulshoff won three European Cups (1971-73) and (i think) 7 Dutch Championships.
he managed 6 goals in 14 caps between 1971-73 (injured for '74 World Cup).

he briefly managed Ajax after Cruyff went to Barca but was in charge
for the shock Cup Winner's Cup Final defeat to Mechelen (1988).
Hulshoff later had a long career as a coach with various clubs in Belgium.
recently he had been the agent of Matthijs de Ligt who left Ajax for
Juventus last year.

This has really affected me, I learned so much from him over the years, and only saw him again recently. Such a huge part of educating me about music... so upsetting.

The warmth of the tributes are a testament to how well he was thought of - you are not alone! I only recently started properly listening to his NTS show "Music's not for everyone", it's brilliant.
