A Lazarus Soul in Whelans. Terrific gig.

I went to the matinee deerhunter gig in whelans. Not the best day to be walking around town. Soaked by the time I got there. The opening act was an Asian looking guy with long hair & glasses doing electronic music. The first track was this long, droning ominous thing which must have lasted for 12 -15 minutes. It eventually finishes & He's staring the next one, more dark, distorted, droning low frequencies. My back was starting to ache from standing. I don't have the patience for this pointless bullshit today. Fuck this. I found out what derrhunter were on & went to the chipper. Deerhunter came on around 16.50. It felt like an eternity. One of the downsides of going to a gig by yourself. The sound was pretty good. I suppose it depends where you are in the venue. I wish they would ease back on the sub bass in these places. But over all the band sounded good. BC talks a lot which can be funny & endearing but a bit tiresome. They had to restart what happens to people, jet lag was blamed & a long discussion about Halloween & paganism ensued. Good gig for the most part. I would have preferred to have gotten a ticket for the main show, but it sold out. As Cox said "this is like one of those in-store shows"

Daughters & Jeromes dream. Jeromes dream were class & one of the main reasons for going. Very few people seemed to know them.
Daughters were great, but there was something odd about the set. For such weird atonal music they had the crowd worked up like an eighty's stadium gig. Hanging on every word.

Permission/Disguise/Strong Boys/Extravision in Jigsaw

Considering the rain it wasn't the worst turnout.

Sound was dreadful for Extravision. Guitar was too quiet by a long way. But could just as easily have been as I was standing to the side.

Strong Boys new lineup sounded great,powerful.

Disguise,still the best live band in Ireland. Easily.

Permission weren't bad but suffered from following Disguise.

That was Deerhunter's drummer Moses (apparently their most Irish member) doing his droney side project.. I made the same mistake of showing up at 3pm not realizing that was just doors open time and having to stand there feeling damp for an hour and three quarters before Deerhunter starting. I did really enjoy the gig despite that, it was messy even by their standards presumably thanks to jetlag / sleep deprivation and Bradford's chats were even more rambling than usual but they're a reliably powerful live act once they get going. I'd admit to being lukewarm about the latest album but the stuff from that sounded better live, especially the long Nocturne with the manic roadie turned fiddle player joining in. Almost exactly 12 years since their first gig in Whelans which makes me feel ancient, they're still a band I'd go and see every time they come though.

Was at this too. Caught the end of Jerome Dream and enjoyed what I saw.
I liked Daughters but wasn't blown away by them. There were parts of it that were fantastic but they were a bit too dour and humourless in some ways. It was like the gig was lacking a certain energy. I still love the latest album though

I was at "THE TRUE Mayhem" in the academy there.
Missed first support Gost but had seen him before with Perturbator, he's funny but nothing special.
Main support Gaahl's Wyrd were actually really good, I enjoyed them more than Mayhem for the 40 or so minutes they were on.
THE TRUE Mayhem did play a very good set, sounded good (for black metal) although as usual guitars were a bit muddy in the mix.
One of the best things about the gig was the fact that some fuckwit tried to bring a dead pigeon in to the venue and security caught him, hahahaha

Was at the evening show. They were great. The keyboards are fantastic on the newer songs but muddied a lot of the older ones. The encore as a four piece worked well for that reason. What Happens to People was a highlight. Was BC in Bowie-esque get up cw Deirdre Barlow glasses at the matinee as well?

I just loved the Deerhunter matinee, it was a great atmosphere, great sound, BC rambling in the most wry way, all adding up to the best Saturday afternoon in ages.

If Mayhem were playing somewhere else I would have gone but the last time they played The Academy was shit (crap sound, shitty room layout, crap beers). Saw them years ago in the Button Factory for the Ordo Ad Chao tour and thought they were class then.

Went to see Mayhem kind of because I missed Opeth on Friday I thought it was deadly. The set was divided into three parts the first being there new album then they did some of Des Mysteriis and after that the earlier Deatcrush stuff. Gaahl's Wyrd was great also I should have bought their record really although I couldn't help occasionally crack up at ridiculousness of his moans and screams plus the ominous posses it was great though.

Sadly, the new lineup is really missing the spark the old one had and the new tunes aren't up to much either imho. It's like going to a gig expecting to see the Velvet Underground and instead being greeted with an 80's mulleted Lou Reed and a pile of bland session musicians. Really shows just how much of a secret weapon their sadly departed old bass player was. Unneccessary keyboards were ridiculous too.

Really wish Bradford would stop ruining what is possibly their finest song by shoehorning "Horses" into the jam section. Nothing Ever Happens is almost always the most epic and transcendental moment of their set and now it just turns into a pointless dirge halfway through, only to whimper to stop.

They play a sax live on a song now too (yeah, I know there's sax on the album). If that's not a warning sign a band is passed their sell-by date, I dunno what is.

Kinda bummed I got soaked through for that gig. Only good buzz was getting to hang with Hermie afterwards!!

still haven't seen EXTRAVISION or STRONG BOYS.
i didn't even know SB had LP out until recently !

last things i was @ were VARUKERS and DEZERTER in last month.
both really good nights.
nearly everyone @ DEZERTER was Polish.
was slightly expensive for a punk gig (25 in advance 35 on night) but
promoters Alternativ 4 who specialise in bring over Polish bands seem
to price all their events the same ??
got talking to a great guy who gave me a rolling translation on the songs/lyrics
as the gig progressed.
the fast 80's classics in particular got people dancing.
I never buy T shirts at gigs but got a DEZERTER one thinking that hopefully
some Poles here in bogger land will come up to me and talk about music.

I was a little underwhelmed too. The crowd really annoyed me, I was standing at the back (I think just a bit across from yourself and Mr. Chasm) and people kept lorrying back and forth for pints, I would say a certain couple went to the bar at least 6 times during the set. Loads of people didn't seem to have a clue who they are. I couldn't hear the electric violin at all, though tbh I thought it was really out of place.

Bradford's voice is absolutely beautiful but I wish he would have shut up with the showboating a bit throughout the set, he actually started to really annoy me at one stage and the left-handed thing and cringe.

The band was extremely lifeless but I assumed that was because they'd played two shows in a row with jet lag. Bradford seemed to be carrying the whole thing. Nothing Ever Happened to Me was great, but agreed, ruined with Horses.

The highlight for me was What Happens to People.
