The Ludichrist demos and that first lp are great, that cover is a very low point on i thought. Second record is pretty bad.

had to look up who did the original.
maybe the best song i've heard from them.
i want to like CHEAP TRICK but they are too American and not hard enough for my tastes.
they look cool BUT Rick's antics are so contrived here i wonder why he bothers pretending
to be a nerd.

That's a pretty wussy tune to be saying they are not hard enough for your taste.

They were never a hard,or heavy or whatever band, but they do have plenty of harder tunes, they also have a lot of way softer tunes. Listen to the first two(4) records and if you don't like those, run away.

fair enough, they are what they are.
before i listened to them on you tube i expected something more RAMONESy
but i was far off the mark.
much like i expected KISS to sound more metal like an english band e.g. PRIEST.
and i listened to probably all the KISS tracks you posted a couple of years ago.
ignorance of US 70's FM rock led me to some clueless conclusions.

does Rick ever speak about why chose his stage image ?
also didn't they do some albums under other names pre TRICK that flopped ?

Fukuoka, Japan punks CONFUSE - Spending Loud Night EP (1987)

says recorded 20-8-1983 on cover but this is prior to band starting
so it's probably just a mistake and actually recorded in August 1985 (?).
very distorted Hardcore Punk heavily influenced by Bristol bands
Disorder and Chaos UK....

title track begins @ 4:48
after first hearing this in the mid 90's it became one my favourite songs
ever since. i love the distortion, the anti romantic lyrics, that they
could write a great tune and make it so noisy.

then one day about ten years ago someone posted the song on you tube
laid over a video of some band called SALON MUSIC - WTF was this ???

Spending Loud Night was actually a cover of
SALON MUSIC - Spending Silent Night (1983) with changed lyrics...

lyric changes:
Spending Silent Night / Spending Loud Night
i am dreaming about you / i am dreaming of revolution
please kiss my cheek / let's kick back their cheek
step on the excelerator, hurry up, hurry up / step on the system, hurry up, hurry up/ etc.

Spending Silent Night was used on Honda car adverts in 1983 -
here's a compilation of 83/84 Honda adverts w/ SALON MUSIC
(also includes a France Gall song on one )

so there you have it -
the greatest moment in the canon of Japanese hardcore IMO is actually a
cover of a cutesy Japanese new wave song.

I remember when i was first listening to them I expecting something a bit more Ramones-y as well, they kind of have that image on first glance. A song like He's a Whore starts off like it's going to be pure 1977 punk and then goes VERY FM rock.

Once i'd adjusted my ears and expectations I came to love them

The internet says Huntz Hall of the Bowery Boys

I'm not going to pretend I knew who they were, I vaguely recognize some of the characters as the kind of pop ephemera that would turn up as an obscure joke in a mid 90's simpsons but they seem to have largely fallen to the cultural wayside.

also didn't they do some albums under other names pre TRICK that flopped ?
Fuse. I've never heard it.

My work here has been done.

Except for the Fuse record.
I have it,it's not bad but nothing like Cheap Trick. Rick Nielsen plays keyboards on it,not guitar and Tom Petersson plays bass. I think Bun E Carlos eventually joined and they evolved in to Cheap Trick. Members of the Nazz had also been in Fuse I believe.

cheers Gary and Professor Lili Marlene.
great stuff.

i'm a long time BIG BLACK fan. so i knew their cover of 'He's A Whore'.
must have heard the original before but don't remember it being this good -
this is fairly close to what i expected C.T. to be prior to hearing them, that being :
hard rock with punkish melodies that appeal to all the punks i've heard praise them.
makes more sense now.

first C.T. song i heard that i knew was them was 'Dream Police'
as opposed to 'The Flame' which i never realized was them until
mid 2000's - so it didn't prejudice my opinion of them as a youngster.

FUSE song reminds me of "I'm A Man" by 60's era CHICAGO ?

This also belongs in the didn't know it was a cover thread, but as it's now my favourite cover version it goes here. The Denny Laine original is rubbish, as it happens

RE CHEAP TRICK -
have listened to their first LP a few times now and i like it.
unfortunately it didn't sell and the studio LP's that followed are very
overproduced in comparison - a pity.
but will listen to them more.

1992 cover of SHANGRI-LAS
GIMCP were part of the early scene at ABC No Rio squatted venue
in early 90's New York.

plenty of bands do No Wave style stuff now but in the 90's the post punk
era was strangely forgotten (even at the time this made no sense to me).

Peel loved them, they usually had two drummers and lots of lyrics from gay
or bi angle. John Zorn played on one of their EP's
however they simply released FAR too much material and i lost interest quickly.
they get a bonus point for their label being the first one i wrote to where one
of the band (singer Sharon) answered the mail.

this is off the Hidden Lie LP (live in Paris 1986) on New Rose.
as this hasn't been reissued i suppose it was released without
the bands permission ??

for many years i thought Mary who plays guitar on this (rather than drums)
was the most attractive Irish woman i could think of.
finally i realized she was actually a lad called David.

It was an official release and the New Rose version from 1993 was a reissue. The earlier release was on a French label I think?

i stand corrected.
yep, my friend had this LP years ago, he got it in Spindizzy.
the first press was on Baby from 1987 released in France.
the New Rose CD version is from 1993.
also really like the song The Story That Never Ends.
much better LP than The Moon Looked Down And Laughed
i think.
