Recommend me some Jazz (2 Viewers)

picked this one up recently:

Kamasi Washington - The Epic

pretty good. reminds me at times of doug/jean carn, mccoy tyner, john coltrane. it's nearly 3 hours worth. takes a few listens to get into it.

Playing the NCH in June!

I know @hugh previously mentioned this, but the blackstar backing band are playing the NCH in October. Playing stuff from a new album "dedicated" to Bowie, i.e. an unknown quantity.

But surely they will be playing some Blackstar stuff too. I've seen them do Warszawa on youtube. Worth a punt at €20?

Anyone know what the Studio is in the NCH?
The National Concert Hall, Dublin - Perspectives: Donny McCaslin Group

I'd book a ticket anyways tbh; havent' heard any reports about their album, but i'd say they'd be worth seeing themselves. I've no idea what the Studio is.
This crowd are also lined up for a June slot in the Sugar Club - I've been listening to their latest album and it's great -

I listened to their most recent album (the one that has Warszawa on it) and it was pretty flat in comparison to Blackstar.

for anyone interested, record collector have a new release from their 'rare vinyl series'. a british jazz release I know nothing about. the youtube clip provided sounds pretty cool. but i'm refraining from purchasing, buying way too much stuff recently. gotta cut back. I have bought one of these releases from record collector before, a hard rock compilation they put together, actually worth a good bit of cash now. not that i'd ever sell.

Don Rendell rare vinyl

@travispickle and anyone who digs mingus...

this has been scratching that itch for me of late. was in the running for my best of 2016 until i realised it was released in late '15. at its best, it captures mingus's cacophanous spirit but still swings like fluffy dice through a chicane.

Nice one thanks for the heads up. That's a new one to me so looking forward to checking it out.

Listening to a bit of Pharoah Sanders this morning, who I've really only dipped into before. Great stuff!

over the past few years I've ended up at a load of small live jazz shows. my (ex) band were mostly extracted from the jazz scene so I was going to their shows and ending up socialising in those spots. then me and a mate went on a three day music beer and food bender at galway jazz fest.

My recommendation is to find a local jazz show and go to it every few weeks and get familiar with it all. Its the most wonderful, communicative based live thing (if the people are swinging).

Yeah, I've really got to get the finger out on the auld live jazz. Some folk on here have mentioned the sessions in JJ Smyths, looks like it's closed now - since April?!

sign up for the improvised music company's monthly email which has details of one-off gigs and loads of regular sessions, both with house bands and with revolving casts.

brian smyth of jj smyth's is one of _the_ unsung heroes of the irish jazz scene. not a player or a salaried arts pro, just a fan who happened to have an upstairs room which he put at the disposal of the local scene, for little or no personal gain other than involvement in the music he loves. and a gent to his boots.

Nice one, will do that, cheers!

Yeah, people like that are few and far between - fair play to him.

I second the IMC nod, they put some good stuff on. Also Note Productions are worth keeping an eye on too. They put on some good stuff and Mathew Nolan (3epkano) is now involved too. - Note Productions - Ireland's Leading Jazz Promoters - The Curator's Club with Pumajaw & Serafina Steer by invitation of Adrian Crowley

Pity about JJ's finally closing (if that's the case), saw some great gigs there of late and came to it rather belatedly unfortunately. Hopefully they might carry something similar on elsewhere.
