This is a really fucking big deal.
It's still have hard to come out in Ireland and I know at least 4 people that have lost their family over it.

I always think about how if you are a straightlord you are never expected to make a declaration about your sexuality, but if you are a gaylord you are expected to make a statement of it.

it is the thing i find that unless it is otherwise known, people make an assumption that a person is heterosexual or binary gender and not any of the many many different gender identification or sexual orientations there are with the at a wedding thing "you're next" or " so when are you going to settle down and have children"

even coupled-up unmarried, unchildered people are subjected to that shite
it never ends until they're sure you've conformed utterly

I don't think i addresses why coming out has to be an event, its just similar in that

A: you are young and single and expected to marry and have kids
B: you are young and gay and expected to come out

neither are really cool.

similar to saying 'those irish love their potatoes'

as said by an irish vs. an english person

I guess. Between friends though.

My local is a mostly gay bar where the banter is fairly robust. The line of appropriateness gets stepped on fairly often. That's the kind of gag that would work there.
I'm probably guilty of stepping over the line at times.
Everyone's just looking for a laugh though.

I can usually tell the difference between a hateful potato or whiskey dick joke and one that's not.
