I don't believe that dead people's souls are lingering around the planet... but I don't discount that something we aren't fully aware of might be.

When I was very young, maybe 4 since my little sister wasn't born yet, my grandfather (Papa) was planning to buy an old convent building to turn into a guesthouse and when we were visiting he took us (my parents, my brother and me) to see it.

I remember we were in a long corridor, and the place was lovely, but I felt really uncomfortable there, and Papa asked me what I thought of the place. I said "It's ok, but I don't like that lady." "What lady?" he asked. "That lady" my brother said, pointing to the lady I saw at the end of the hall. Papa said "Right, we're leaving!" I didn't think much more of it at the time, but about 10 years later Papa and a friend of his were having a conversation about the "feel" of places, and how homes can have a good or bad vibe. And Papa told him about how he hadn't bought the convent because my brother and I had seen something, how my parent's had said it was nonsense because none of them (Papa, Granny, Mum and Dad) had seen anything, but he trusted us and our gut instincts and wouldn't buy a house again without a few children to vet it first.

Up until then I had assumed that everyone could see the lady... not just my brother and me, and that Papa had just changed his mind about the place for other reasons.

Children hallucinate a lot. It was initially thought to be indicative of possible future psychoses but overall it seems like hallucinating is a normal part of development. It makes sense when you think about it, the brain is setting down the networks needed for life and there's bound to be a bit of noise in the system while it beds down.

Getting doored on your bike is a million times scarier than serial killers, because it could actually happen.

This does scare me a lot more than serial killers.

Yeah that's what i was saying all along. It's mental that people experience the same thing in certain places. Basically ghosts are as real as phantom limbs, miraculous cures, being frightened to death.

Sorry @Cornu Ammonis I know this is like pissing on your profession and all.

Our brains are basically fucking mysteries.

Piss away. I'd argue that it's far less mysterious than most people think. Phantom limbs were fully explained by Ramachandran about 20 years ago and now can be treated.

I'm a strong subscriber to the "why ask your head when it's your hips that are trembling" school of thought when it comes to ghosts.

I'm absolutely petrified of ghosts, always have been. In theory I really don't believe in them, but it doesn't stop an all encompassing, petrifying fear when I'm on my own. I always get spooked when people say they don't believe in ghosts, when they're around me because I'm like oh god what if they hear this and try to prove they're there. Which is as nonsensical as it gets, but I'm that wimpy. I still sleep with a night light, because I'm so terrified of the dark.

My mom is obsessed with this stuff, and she said that when I was little, maybe 2 or 3 she came into the room and I was talking to someone (much like washingcattles story) and when she asked me about it I started describing my great-grandfather, who I'd never met or heard of. She also said that as a young child I used to babble on about my dreams, and then eerie details would come true. I'm 100% sure this was all bull, because she also kind of thinks I have the ability to be psychic if I open my mind, and I'm 100% sure I am not psychic.

Anyway, my whole thing is, its weird how even if you don't believe in ghosts, the fear of not really being alone when no one is around, can be crippling. I get it so tangibly, that it feeds into my anxiety. I can't sleep without a small light and music playing, because I'm terrified I'll hear something.
