bad parents? (1 Viewer)

So what your saying Egg is that is ok to be a bad parent and let kids wear clothes with slogans on them that are fundamentally wrong no matter how sparkly they are.

Naw. As I is John says, they're disturbing for adults, and letting your kids wear them makes you look bad, but the clothes aren't going to do the kids any harm

I wouldn't have known 25 years ago but ask a 10 year old today and I'd say at least 80% (excluding undeveloped countries obviously) of them do.

There's a difference between know and understand.

edit: obviously you know this, sorry, didn't mean to seem patronising :( It's just the "understand" part of what I said was important - a kid might know what a prostitute or a porn actor is, but until he/she has a sex drive they're not really going to get it

Fine. Note: I still disagree because it goes beyond that especially when it comes to little girls and their self esteem.
Hey maybe we can agree that while simply wearing a "future porn star" t-shirt isn't going to do a kid any harm, if it's an indicator that she's growing up in an environment where availability to the opposite sex is seen as all-important then she's unlikely to grown up to be a well-adjusted woman

They understand. I'm completely horrified on the bus sometimes overhearing pre-teen girls and their conversations. Beleive me, I grew up fast even 25 years ago but it's at a super speed rate now. I just personally find it sad young kids are bombarded with crap (so much more than in my childhood because of technology) that it kind of kills the wonder in growing up. Kids are rather perceptive and pick up more than people generally think. I saw it happen with my nieces and nephews. I was never saying things should be censored and 'good parents' shelter (in fact I was talking about parenting at all rather society as a whole) I just find it sad and it's one of the many reasons I'll never have a child.

Hey listen, i'd personally agree with pretty much all your points.

i'll explain in a tedious and convoluted manner later when I get a chance but it's basically a lot to do with adults needing a perceived sense of 'wonder' more for their own sanity than for the children themselves.

the actual experience of being a child almost doesn't come into it.

Yeah, but they pick it up all arseways. Mine do anyway. But they're young yet, maybe I'll change my tune when they're older and come back here and say "Jill Hives was right all along" :) We're kinda protected living out in the countryside though (with no TV)

I think there is nothing wrong with German kids running around naked in the summer, any quams we might have probably come from our Catholic Irish (or American puritan) sensiblities...which are fine to have as long as we recognise them as subjective.

However, when it comes to 50 or 60 year old naked Germans, I feel a little less tolerent...

I'm neither disagreeing with your points nor trying be a pain about semantics here, but can you define what you mean when you say 'grew up' ?

that is really really not what he was saying. that's the adrian kennedy talkshow mentality again

Ah yeh can get fucked John. I don't subscribe to that adrian kennedy tabloid mentality, never have, never will.

But I am of the opinion a fucking child, who doesn't know any better, relies on their parents better judgment to make decisions for them and dressing them in a garment with THAT kind of slogan on it is just fucking wrong.

Claiming they are innocent & too young to know what it means is no fucking defense whatsoever.

A minor is the parents responsibility. And there is nothing cute or adorable or funny about a minor in a Future Porn Star tshirt.

What next? Cute little baby strap on dildos? Aww look at that its cute because they don't know what it means. Fuck off.

then why did you knowingly misconstrue egg_'s statement that kids don't fully understand the adult connotations clothing can have as "it's not ok for parents to protect their young" ?

NO ONE IN THIS THREAD HAS SAID OTHERWISE.

i was reading somewhere recently about the nature of moral disgust and the link between moral disgust and physical disgust. i can't find the link now, but suffice to say that our moral intuitions are sort of crazy. this is only tangentially related to kid's clothing, but hey.

is this thread more about adult perceptions and aspirations being projected on their kids, or can it be??
beacous i perceeeve soccer stars to be womanising fountains of testosterone fueled by an urge to gain trophies on a diet of coke and porches, however, it is 'cute' to dress up the youngfella in wayne rooney shirts etc etc but in pparrallell its not cute when young billy or jonny grows up to batter the wife on coke because she gave out about his multiple affairs.

trophies are weird really.
