does anyone know,
if i was to possibly go back to college to do (a second) masters, would I be able to get grants or what not off the government? What are the financial implications of going back to college when you're thirty?

As far as I know you can only get the standard student grant (i.e. fees paid and €3000ish) for qualifications that are a step up from your previous ones; i.e. if you only had a bachelors degree, you could probably get it for a masters, but if you have a masters, you'll probably only get it for a PhD.

There's the Back To Education Allowance as well but I think you have to be on the dole for a year first and I dunno what their stance is on giving it to people who are already qualified at postgrad level.

For a research masters leading to a PhD you might be able to apply for the IRCHSS/IRCSET grants but there's very little out there for taught masterses.

There might be specialised funding available for your particular area (my second masters had most of the fees paid under the Graduate Skills Conversion Programme) but as far as the bog-standard government grants go, already having a masters is going to work against you.

First one was in English, second one was in E-Business (basically web/software/database design and development from a business perspective).

Graduate Skills Conversion Programme is nifty enough if you can find a course in it you want, it's mainly IT/IS type stuff but I notice there are a few music technology/digital media type courses now. The list is here (scroll down to "Postgraduate Skills Funding"): http://www.hea.ie/en/skills+funding

Though the bit of the fees you still have to pay has gone up from €1,600 to €2,000, meep.

I worked in the Higher Education Grants for a bit, you're covered for four years of postgrad study and four years of undergrad, but you can only get a grant if it's a progression from what you were doing previously.. so in short, no. you could get covered for a phd or whatever, but not another masters.

i have a bachelors degree, so if i want to do a masters, i can get fees paid and standard grant no problem? i haven't lived at home for 6 years.

yup as long as you meet the income requirements and apply under your own income. you need all your income details from october of the previous year (so 2008 for the academic year of 2009). i think if you're coming in as a mature applicant (over 23) then you need to have been out of college for at least a year...so it has to have been at least a year before you did your BA..

if you're applying to go back to college under the BTEA and
your chosen course is at the same level as your current
qualification, you won't be eligible except, to quote "under
exceptional circumstances". they have some numeric level
system in there since around 2004. so if you're otherwise
eligible you could make a case for yourself under those
disconcertingly vague conditions... I guess that means if you
did a course in something completely pointless where your
career prospects are nil. kind of like the course I did :)

I never did a degree, but I jumped straight into a postgrad
diploma from a music tech diploma in 2001. went back a
couple of months ago to enrol in the computer science
degree course in ucc to find out I was 'over qualified', which
is a bit of a balls. probably could have made a case for myself
if I hadn't also missed the mature student application deadline as well...

hey super dexta: did you do that e-business course in cork?

yes I did. In yew see see.

I can't even begin to explain how much this thread makes me bitter.

Yeah, fees of €2000 a year are pretty insignificant when viewed from a US perspective. One of my friends graduated 12 years ago and is STILL paying off his student loans, and he only borrowed the fees.

I'll be paying them until I die. In 8 years I've only managed to pay back 40,000 and I'm not even half way.

is there a reason the fees are so mental?

Capitalism. My BA college is now 38,000 a year.

State schools are cheaper but you're still looking at about 16,000 a year for them. Also one has to consider room and board if you're not from a bigger city with a school you want to go to in it. If you go out of your home state, it's more money too. They have 'out of state' and 'in state' prices. It's all insane.

but you still get morons who just want to party in american colleges? (that's based on knowledge gleaned from college movies such as animal house)

Yep, either because they have wealthy parents who pay for school and are douchebags already. Or they are so happy to be away from home and student loans are kind of like credit cards. You sign up once however instead of getting a bill every month you get it 4 years down the line. It's really easy to forget you actually have to pay. You owe the government. So if you don't pay, they garnish your wages.

Sorry this thread got off track, pad. Back to your lovely educational system here. One that allows things like around the world trips and such after you get out because you're not knee deep in debt.
