Just over one month from the release of their new album Plastic Anniversary on 15 March, electronic duo Matmos (Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt) have unveiled the album's title track. "Plastic Anniversary" is the album's most affecting piece, swelling cod-medieval martial drums and horn fanfares.
Plastic Anniversary was crafted as the duo celebrated their 25th anniversary as musical collaborators and as a couple. The sounds used on the album were crafted using exclusively plastic objects, with the title track utilizing: poker chips, pvc panflute, plastic ocarina, plastic trumpet and trombones, and a plastic fish fashioned into a jock strap - the very same fish that Daniel was wearing as a go-go dancer when he met Schmidt in San Francisco.
Though it has the tight editing chops, pop forms, and bizarre sound palette of their early albums, Plastic Anniversary has a distinctive sound because of the foregrounding of human performances. Members of the horn and drumline sections of the Whitefish Highschool Bulldogs from Whitefish, Montana were recruited by Matmos to contribute in recording sessions at Snowghost Studios.
Following the release of Plastic Anniversary, the duo will be touring throughout Europe, and plan to tour into the summer through southeast Asia and the U.S.
