Music Network at Body & Soul 2016

Explore exceptional live music at the Woodlands Stage on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June

"...the delicacy Begley’s voice was beautifully circumnavigated by McKay’s gloriously hip-swivelling harp rhythms and by the deep troughs of Stout’s of fiddle lines..."- The Irish Times

“If you like your sonic fields wide and cerebral, then this is the band for you”- The Irish Times on OKO

“Christine Tobin is inspiring on her own material. But she is in a class of her own singing Leonard Cohen. Her new version of Everybody Knows is stunning... Gorgeous, affecting and deeply human.”- The Guardian ****

Opening the Woodlands Stage on Saturday is Irish squeeze box maestro and raconteur Séamus Begley joined by the 'sonically exquisite'(The Guardian) Scottish duo Catriona McKay and Chris Stout. Brought together by Music Network in September 2014, this trio has captivated audiences with their exhilarating and virtuosic live performances in a celebration of traditional Irish and Scots music. Their first CD Begley McKay Stoutwas album of the week in the Irish Times, describing it as‘music of the moment: bristling with the excitement of newly minted camaraderie and bolting towards the door for the wide open spaces it craves.’Expect sparks to fly one minute, and to have your heartstrings tugged the next!

Next up is Dublin electro-acoustic quartet OKO, who specialise in improvising on skeletal compositions while drawing on a wealth of influences such as krautrock, vintage TV shows, free jazz, noise, ambient, dub, drum & bass, dubstep, musak, hip-hop, IDM and more. Featuring guitarist Shane Latimer, keyboardist Darragh O’Kelly, percussionist Shane O’Donovan and turntablist DJackulate, their music shifts from lush synth-drenched sculptures to tight hooks, loose grooves, robust scratching and liberated improvising.

Award-winning Irish vocalist and songwriter Christine Tobin is renowned for her unique, rich voice and original compositional style. Treasured in the UK and beyond as one of the leading lights on the contemporary scene, her authentic, deeply expressive sound has been praised by The Guardian both for the poetry of her writing and the warmth of her golden ‘24 carat voice’. A Thousand Kisses Deepis a programme of new arrangements of Leonard Cohen songs. Christine has been a lifelong fan, and her unique interpretations make for an inspired celebration of the legendary Canadian singer, songwriter and poet.

Sunday afternoon kicks off with Bangers and Crash percussion trio led by Alex Petcu (National Concert Hall Rising Star 2015) with Maeve O'Hara and Paddy Nolan. Brace yourself for the polyrhythmic delights of a thrilling programme of contemporary music, played on a range of percussion instruments including marimbas, vibraphone, kit, toms, woodblocks, bongos and more. Experience exotic timbres, pulsing rhythms and interwoven melody lines as three masters of the orchestral percussion section take centre stage.

The Carducci Quartetis recognised as one of today’s most successful string quartets. Highly celebrated for their interpretation of contemporary repertoire, the Quartet is regularly invited to perform new works by composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. For this very special concert they will perform 'Different Trains'by Reich, one of "a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history", according to The Guardian.‘Different Trains'is a three-movement piece for string quartet and tape that compares and contrasts Reich’s childhood memories of train journeys between New York and California in 1939–1941 with the very different trains being used to transport contemporaneous European children to their deaths under Nazi rule.

Last but not least, a dream team brought together by Music Network in 2013 - button accordion master Máirtín O’Connor, fiddle player Zoë Conway and guitar and bouzouki player Donal Lunny. Between them they have worked with every hugely influential Irish traditional music group from Planxty and Dé Dannan to the Bothy Band and Riverdance among others. Don't miss this illustrious trio in what promises to be an atmospheric and unforgettable concert, drawing on an eclectic mix of the old and new where traditional tunes and songs meet each of their diverse influences and unique compositional voices.

Music Network’s mission is to make high quality live music available and accessible to people throughout Ireland. Keep an eye out for details of our Autumn tours at www.musicnetwork.ie.
