DAVID TORN'S PREZENS
Featuring Tim Berne, Graig Taborn and Tom Rainey
Virtuoso guitarist and electronics magician David Torn makes his Irish debut with his latest project, Prezens.
Prezens is the stunning band featuring Tim Berne, Graig Taborn and Tom
Rainey that recently released the acclaimed album of the same name for
ECM. On it, Torn produces atmospheres like Venus – dense and scarily
beautiful, with an alien palette and giant storms of sulphuric acid
clouds. Yet there is also frenetic energy, grimy funk and trippy
electronica here.
David Torn is a fascinating multi-faceted artist: composer, texturalist
and producer. He has played and been a significant long-terms
collaborator with innovative artists from across the spectrum including
David Bowie, Tori Amos, Mick Karn, David Sylvian and Jan Garbarek. His
work is a collision of the organic and the synthetic, of technology and
physicality. He is a key influence in ambient and looped music. From
his landmark release Cloud About Mercury (ECM), he has also released
the solo gems Tripping Over God, What Means Solid, Traveller? and
Polytown. He has also excelled in composing soundtracks for films such
as The Departed and Lars and The Real Girl.
Prezens project is one of the most compelling and visceral bands to emerge in 2008.
"This time around Torn has teamed up with a cracking band... But this
is not just an off-duty jazz jam. Torn takes the contingencies of
improvising... and reworks them into music full of contrasts, dynamic
changes and narrative drive." The Guardian
"I, and rest of the audience, went wild when David Torn's Prezens
played... The show had taken the rich resources of this formidable
quartet to another level" John Fordham, The Guardian.
