CRYSTAL CASTLES (MEROK Records, CANADA)
CAP PAS CAP (SKINNY WOLVES Records, IRELAND)
GIBBY (U:MACK)
& MAXIMUM JOY DJ's
Underground @ Kennedys, Westland Row, Dublin
From 10 til late
May 11th, €10
They formed the band accidentally and released a
microphone test as their first single, yet it's with great delirium
that we welcome CRYSTAL CASTLES to Maximum Joy for their debut gig in Dublin.
A duo from Toronto, CRYSTAL CASTLES (Alice and Ethan) have created a bit of a sensation with releases such as 7" 'Alices Practice' which sold out in days; the - up there on myspace - ' Magic Spells',
just listen to it, stunning...; as well as acclaimed remixes of various
hipster bands (KLAXONS, THE LITTLE ONES, HEALTH etc). This has
culminated in recent appearances at the NME Rave Tour w/CSS and SXSW,
not to mention a forthcoming tour with The Presets. Phew!
Their music has been variously described as 8 bit art
punk, spazz rock, lo-fi and no-wave slo-disco elektro-jam(s), console
sounds for the devil... ok I made that last one up but you know what
I'm saying.
If that wasn't enough they will be preceded by musically well endowed no wave heroes CAP PAS CAP.
Hot from getting hitched with cook as fuck Japanese label Rallye Klee
(Au Revoir Simone, Klaxons, Teenagers etc) and selling out there very
first 12" ' Not Not Is Fine' they've even got das deutche trilling at their early achievements
"hints of bands like BUSH TETRAS, PYLON, early SONIC
YOUTH and many more come to mind - but the best thing is that CAP PAS
CAP turn all this into a sound of their own! Not only the best thing
out of Ireland since many many years, but maybe as well one of the best
records of this and last year!" - X-MIST, Germany
This is going to be so good be sure to bring smelling salts!
PRESS RELEASE GUFF
CRYSTAL CASTLES
"neuromantic trash genius, heavy metal casio duracell-powered ballads and beats that drop like napalm tetris pieces"
"We play rough" whisper Crystal Castles with intent, a
boy-girl duo from Toronto, Canada who have the electronic underground
in the palm of their hands with their debut release for Merok Records,
the 'Alice Practice' EP.
Named after none other than She-Ra's home, there are a
few more facts that you should know about Ethin and Alice; They hate
videogames. Listen to their 8-bit sounds and here is the evidence of
people gleefully winning their war with machines. Dollar-store
keyboards are bought, the soundchips ripped out, and replaced with ones
from 80s Atari computers. Simple, dangerous to your health, and it
works.
Born in 2004 from the street they both inhabit in Toronto, Crystal Castles are the product of Ethin's music and Alice's lyrics

CAP PAS CAP
'This is not the raw sound of punk, it's more dispassionate... The spark of something more literate and experimental.'
A history
1978-2004: Inspired by late seventies/early
eighties no-wave punk sounds and with a fascination with all things
psychedelic and krautrock their early attempts at creating the 'song'
proved difficult. With a new definition of the 'song', the 'band' was
happening. All of the group had aspirations to break out a new modern
sound and taking the sheer raw energy of their influences, matching it
with their noise-damaged shifting guitars, dynamic multi-percussion and
accidental vocal bursts, Cap Pas Cap was an infant.
Then it was 2005. Cap Pas Cap began playing live
with a truly catastrophic show in March. This was their first show
which featured a lot of whiskey. From this point onward they embraced
their unorthodox efforts at making pop music and decided to carry on as
they had originally started - with a complete disregard for any
conventional standards. That June they played a show with new friends
Les Georges Leningrad who reinforced to them that the disorder was
okay, once you add keyboard. They were okay now and anxiously went
forward with a new motto 'the opposite is operative'.
Hello 20,006: Cap Pas Cap have played numerous
critically acclaimed shows in Ireland and the UK with Numbers, Erase
Errata, The Presets, The Go! Team, Gossip, A Certain Ratio and an
appearance at the legendary Reading Festival. Winter arts and crafts
for new record sleeves means cut, fold, stick multiply by two hundred
fifty.
Their future, 2007:
- Second pressing of 'Not Not Is Fine' 12" on Skinny Wolves Records
- 'Not Not is Fine' Japanese cd release through the Rallye/Klee label (home to Klaxons, Au Revoir Simone, Damn Arms, Junior Boys).
- Irish tour with Crystal Castles (Canada) – May 2007
- Album to follow later in the year.
- Remixes by Hot Chip, Martin Rev (Suicide), Crystal Castles and These Are Powers (ex- Liars / Knife Skills)
