Anyone using backing tracks with a drummer live?
just wondering how you go about generating the click track?

is it just a case of playing the backing from a laptop and sending the track to the front of house and the click to the drummer's monitor mix through headphones?

Yeh we use a soundcard with a few outputs. 1 and 2 go to front of house and output 3 is the click in ableton which goes to headphones for the drummer.

If you want a more minimal setup you can make a stereo file with everything panned left and the click panned right. You can then play this track from an mp3 player/phone/cd player/whatever sending the (mono) left channel to FOH and the right channel to the drummers cans.

Monitor mix ? In Ireland ? Ha. Good one. record the click track to an Ipod and get a pair of in ear (Buds) phones and a pair of cans to block out as much of the ambient stage sounds as possible.

So basically these

The best thing to do is get a pair of head phones with a long cord and tape it to the drummers back so that it doesn't get in his/her way. Sounds ridiculous but Murphy's law and all.

Anything else is asking for trouble if you go on tour.

Why do you want a click track anyway are you syncing live drums with samples ?

I'd be wary of using anything other than proper in ear monitors for a click track. You'll almost certainly over compensate to hear it over the onstage volume and could do really serious damage to your hearing. lethal things.

You can get light based devices for stage work, i.e it flashes the tempo for you to see rather than listening to it.. Think Graham Hopkins uses one.
