Rhino to Chronicle 80s Indie Rock with 4xCD Box
Ronald Reagan's just gone cold! Quick! To the capitalizingmobile!

James Gregory reports:
Rhino Records has announced plans to release a new four-disc box set of tunes from the Gipper's communist-crushing reign. Culled from a time when the term "alternative" was more commonly seen before the word "lifestyle" than "music," Left of the Dial: Dispatches from the '80s Underground captures some of the best performances from the decade's most influential indie pioneers. With a diverse mix of punk, new wave and college rock-- as well as a handful of tracks probably meant for another box (really, the Chili Peppers? What hits?!)-- this collection could turn out to be the party set of the year for those with the Repo Man soundtrack on permanent iPod rotation.

According to Billboard, the box set will be released on October 5th at a list price of $64.98 (ah, the true cost of nostalgia), and features interviews with prominent scenesters of the day, including influential label founders Greg Ginn (SST), Peter Jesperson (Twin/Tone), Tony Wilson (Factory Records), and Dream Syndicate frontman Steve Wynn. What, no witty commentary from Hal Sparks, Michael Ian Black or Mo Rocca?? Apparently, Rhino ain't give a good goddamn about historical accuracy. Tracklist: >> Disc One:

String Theory? It closed the conceptual gulp between relativity and quantum mechanics. It postulates that subatomic particles are not points, but strings, about one plank length long. The rate at which strings vibrate can generate the properties of all known particles. Huh! How did I know that? - Willie Garson (as Lee Harvey Oswald) on Quantum Leap.
