North Inner City Folklore Project, DublinCOMMUNITY TRIBUTE TO ‘THE FORGOTTEN WOMEN’OF 1916, THE TAN WAR AND THE CIVIL WAR:EASTER MONDAY (24 MARCH), DUBLINCathleen O’Neill, from Kilbarrack, made the call as she urged people to take part in a parade from Liberty Hall at mid-day on Easter Monday to pay tribute to “the forgotten women” of 1916, the War of Independence and the Civil War. The events are being organised by the community-based North Inner City Folklore Project.A WOMEN’S MOVEMENT and community activist in Dublin has called for a permanent memorial in the City Centre to the women who risked their lives for Irish freedom and equal rights.
Cathleen O’Neill said: “One thing often forgotten about the 1916 Proclamation and the Programme of the First Dáil in 1918 was the declaration of equal rights and equal opportunities for all citizens, a position well advanced beyond most of Europe at the time. Another thing that is regularly overlooked is the important role women played in the struggle for Irish independence and social progress. We remember those women but, so that other generations should be reminded, we are calling for a permanent memorial in the City Centre.”
