“Tragic Epilogue was one of those mindtrip albums of 2000… unequalled, futuristic, split-atom beats.” - Pitchfork

“The first really great hip-hop record of 2000....it triumphantly carries the flag for avant gardism by skillfully and unobtrusively doing all the things that great hip-hop has always done...sounding fresh, coherent and bang on the money throughout.” - The Wire

“Anti-Pop Consortium is some of the most forward-thinking, innovative hip-hop being made today.” – Other Music

After a few years off to work on individual projects, Anti-Pop Consortium have reconvened in full force and are performing at international festivals following an invitation to tour with Public Enemy.

Formed in autumn 1997, united under the credo “disturb the equilibrium,” the Anti-Pop Consortium came together as a divergent force to resist the evil empire hip-hop was slowly becoming.

Three vocalists, Priest, Beans and M.Sayyid, and the aural alchemy of Earl Blaize met at a poetry slam in New York City. Through a mutual appreciation for each others’ work, their collaborations resulted in the now classic underground composition Disorientation.

At its inception The Consortium issued a series of cassette only releases on the then fledgling Anti-Pop Recordings. After circulating the cassettes among divergent taste makers of the NYC underground the four-man crew became known as the Anti-Pop Consortium. With an almost religious fervor the team began their assault with an infamous Xerox and sticker campaign that landed Priest in jail for vandalism under Giuliani's “increased standard of living regime.”

Coupled with the verbal pyrotechnics of their live show the Consortium gained the favor of both the staunch B-boy purists as well as the experimental heads. They released several tape singles and two albums primarily on Dan the Automato 's experimental hip-hop label 75 Ark before being signed by Warp Records in 2000.

The group disbanded due to creative differences in August 2002, with Beans pursuing a solo career while High Priest and M. Sayyid formed Airborn Audio, releasing a single album, Good Fortune, on Ninja Tune in 2005. All three members have pursued solo projects since the group's breakup.

APC completed their third album before they broke up, released in February 2003 as Antipop Consortium vs. Matthew Shipp.

They reunited in 2007 and played a reunion show at the Knitting Factory, New York in March 2008. They are due to perform at the 2009 ATP VS the Fans festival in Minehead, UK.

APC is currently working on materials for their forthcoming album Fluorescent Black.

Melodica Deathship is a new Irish hip-hop project featuring veteran heads Exile eye and Troubled Soul and it is super exciting to hear these experts marrying a dark originals sound with an intriguing seafaring theme. One description reads: Melodica Deathship sounds like the Pogues, Augustus Pablo and King Tubby and Bitches brew era Miles Davis got together to record in the hull of an ancient galleon on a trip to hell.

Possibly Foggy Notions' best work to date. €13 for Anti-Pop too is ridiculously good value. I can't wait for this. Plus Themselves a week or so before it.

from the last thumped.com spam:

Warp Records' Anti-Pop Consortium & Melodica Deathship are playing Whelans on May 16th. Thanks to our pals at Foggy Notions we've got a pair of passes to give away.

No stupid question this time, so to be in the draw just email [email protected] by midnight on May 13th - and please remember to include your contact details....
If you're not on the mailing list you can sign up right here.

Can't wait for this. Been giving Arrhythmia heavy rotation this week.
If it's anything like the weekend you'll probably only get Dead in Motion and Ghostlawns. 90% new stuff, but it is seriously brilliant. Can't wait to see them again on Saturday.

ATP, they really were fantastic.

It will be amazing in Whelans as long as you get a decent amount of people in the door. The turnout for the last few times Beans played here was shameful.

yup, they were fantastic (even tho i only saw the first 3/4) and they somehow managed to be the loudest band at ATP (even moreso than Harvey Milk or Sleep!)

the bass was shaking my innards.

just to confirm that Anti-Pop Consortium are in the country and performing at their scheduled Dublin show tonight
