Can anyone recommend a free video compression tool?

I have tried Handbrake and Avidemux but they don't seem to recognise realplayer files

I have this mkv file I want to burn to a dvd for the auld lad - what is the best general video software that will do this and any other video stuff I might want to do? I might never use it again

Convert X To DVD is by far the easiest. It's pricey but there's "free" versions found easily enough.

dont know about quality settings, but vlc will do a lot of conversions and it might still be free
